Practice Educator - Genomics

Band 8a

Job overview

The North Thames Genomic Medicine Service (NT GMS) is looking for a practice educator to join our team. We are open to applicants from scientific, technologist and bioinformatics backgrounds.  This is a 12-month fixed term contract and there is the potential for a secondment opportunity.

This is an exciting opportunity to shape and deliver education and training for the genomics laboratory workforce, ensuring a sustainable, collaborative, and supportive approach across our laboratories.

The post holder will work closely with the Genomics Training Academy (GTAC) and other stakeholders to develop and implement high-quality training programmes and resources. While the primary focus will be on the laboratory workforce, you will also collaborate on initiatives to support education and development for other members of the GMS workforce where appropriate. This is a unique chance to influence workforce development in a rapidly evolving field, supporting staff to deliver high-quality genomic testing and services that transform patient care.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking an individual who is:

  • Passionate about education and workforce development in healthcare science.
  • Experienced in delivering training and supporting staff development within a clinical or laboratory setting.
  • Skilled in building collaborative relationships and driving positive change.
  • Knowledgeable about genomics and its application in clinical practice (experience in a genomic laboratory is desirable).

The North Thames GMS is at the forefront of delivering cutting-edge genomic services in rare disease and cancer. This role offers the opportunity to make a real impact on workforce development and patient care by ensuring our teams have the skills and knowledge to deliver high-quality genomic testing and services.

Working for our organisation

We are keen to make our workforce as diverse as the communities we serve, and we hope to attract applications from underrepresented groups, including people with Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic heritage, people with a disability, and people from LGBTQ+ communities. By growing an ever more diverse workforce, we’ll have a greater range of perspectives and knowledge, meaning that we can provide the children and young people at our hospital with even better care

Our hospital is committed to creating an environment that is open and inclusive. Our staff are encouraged to engage with colleagues through the following networks: REACH (Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage) ENABLED (Enhancing Abilities & Leveraging Disabilities Network), PRIDE and Women’s networks; all of which are sponsored by a member of our Executive Management Team.

We want to ensure that all of our people, regardless of their background, are seen and heard. We want to attract applicants that share our commitment to inclusion and that understand diversity is a strength that is embraced and valued.
