Clinical Trials Fellow in Paediatric Neurology

Clinical Trials Fellow

Job overview

A new exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical fellow in Clinical Trials/Neurology.

This clinical fellow post will provide excellent opportunity for sub-specialist training in Clinical Trials and Paediatric Neurosciences within a department providing a dynamic, comprehensive, tertiary paediatric neurology service. It is particularly suitable for an individual who is post CCT in Paediatrics/Paediatric Neurology (or equivalent specialist training).

The clinical area requiring cover is Acute Neurology Service as well as review of patients in the Clinical Research Facility

See the individual job description for details, but in summary the post will be split between the Clinical Research Facility and the Acute neurology ward. The main aim of the post is to receive training in clinical trials, and to be responsible for clinical trials currently being undertaken within neurology The acute part of the post will share in a combination of the ward duties on the acute neurology ward, the outpatient clinics and consultations for the rest of the hospital and the neurosurgical ward. The post holder will share clinical responsibilities with the other clinical fellows and StRs. There will be an on-call commitment for all posts to neurology and neurosurgery, inclusive of long-day shifts, nights and weekends.

Main duties of the job

The primary aim of the post is for the incumbent to receive training in clinical trials, and to be responsible for clinical trials currently being undertaken within neurology. The number of clinical trials undertaken in neurology have substantially increased.  As we determine an increasing number of causes to the neurological diseases we treat, there becomes a need to acquire appropriate data in the testing of new treatments.  At Great Ormond Street Hospital, we have the cohorts of children required to contribute to appropriately powered studies. We also increasingly are involved in phase I high intensive studies required in rare disease. We founded and continue to be part ofthe European Reference Network for rare and complex epilepsies EpiCARE, and members of the RITA ERN (for rare inflammatory disorders) where one of the key objectives is to enhance clinical trial availability across Europe. Participation in these initiatives, as well as the expertise and trial critical mass with the Clinical Research Facility Unit provide a unique opportunity for training in clinical trials in rare diseases. The part time clinical fellow requested here would be envisaged to participate in clinical monitoring of patients within neurological clinical trials undertaken in the CRF, so gaining in expertise in the requirements of such trials
