Specialist Biomedical Scientist

Band 6

Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join the Newborn Screening Team within Chemical Pathology Department at GOSH. You will join the team of Scientists at one of the largest paediatric clinical biochemistry departments in the UK.

The Chemical Pathology Department at GOSH is part of the Paediatric Laboratory Medicine, and has strong clinical ties with the Metabolic, Endocrine, Neurology, Gastro-enterology, Transplant and other Clinical Teams. The department hosts the UKs largest Newborn screening service, screening approximately over 120,000 newborns per year. We also provide a comprehensive diagnostic, treatment, and management service to children with a wide range of different conditions including
rare inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs). The laboratory conducts Saturday result review for IMD conditions and you are expected to participate in this activity.

The Laboratory also has strong links with the Neurometabolic Unit at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and with the GOSH Institute of Child Health and is involved in a variety of research projects in the UK and overseas.

Main duties of the job

Ideally applicants should already be HCPC state registered as a Biomedical Scientist and have worked in an accredited Chemical Pathology or Molecular Pathology Laboratory. You should have good
communication skills, be able to work well in a team and be able to take initiative and prioritise workload. The work requires consistent attention to detail and excellent organisational skills.

Further professional development and membership is strongly encouraged with regular internal seminars and financial assistance to attend external courses.

Working for our organisation

We are committed to recruiting the best person for the job through a fair, open and consistent process that is free from bias and discrimination.

We are working towards becoming an anti-racist organisation. This means creating a workplace where every colleague feels seen, heard and valued, and where racism in any form has no place. Our anti-racism commitment is backed by action through our Anti-Racism Statement and action plan, developed in collaboration with our REACH staff network.

We actively challenge discrimination, dismantle barriers and embed equity across all aspects of our workforce, including recruitment, progression and development. All applicants will receive equal consideration regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion or belief, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, disability, health condition or employment history.

We particularly welcome applications from ethnically diverse communities, people with disabilities or long-term health conditions, and LGBTQ+ community members. We are proud to be a Disability Confident Employer, a member of the Business Disability Forum, and a Stonewall Diversity Champion.

Our staff networks, including REACH, PRIDE, ENABLED and Women’s Networks, are active and executive supported. These employee-led networks play a vital role in shaping an inclusive culture at GOSH and are open to all colleagues.

Together, we are building a culture where inclusion is not optional - it is essential.
