Practice Educator - Bear Ward

Job overview

Are you an experienced Nurse with a passion for education? Do you have significant experience at Band 6 (or above) within education or Cardiology? We are looking for an individual with post registration study within relevant speciality subjects who is an experienced supervisor/assessing to join the Heart and Lung Education Team, based on Bear and Alligator Wards.

As a Practice Educator within Bear and Alligator, you will be responsible for training & supporting the development of current staff, as well as recruiting and orientating new staff. You will be directly involved in teaching on foundation programme courses and University Modules as well as developing and delivering local ward-based study days to Bear & Alligator ward staff.

You will be required to be an excellent team player and you will work closely with the Lead Practice Education Team, Clinical Ward Managers, Clinical Nurse Specialists and the other education teams. With a commitment to staff development, you will help to maintain a supportive environment for staff, patients and families in our dynamic and busy wards.

With excellent communication skills and a personable demeanour, the individual needs to be skilled at building relationships with colleagues at all stages of their career, supporting them to develop new skills and experience

Main duties of the job

  • Be a highly visible clinical role model, working alongside staff in clinical practice across all levels of practice.
  • Work clinically to maintain own knowledge, skills and clinical credibility, demonstrating high standards of practice and clinical expertise in the care of children, young people and their families.
  •  Be prepared to work alongside colleagues in non-nursing roles to understand the requirements of different professions/areas.
  •  Work with education leads, managers and supervisors to establish mechanisms for enhancing, developing and assessing the quality of non-nursing placement learning.
  • Co-ordinate and deliver work-based learning and other CPD programmes as required.
  • Utilise, develop and review tools to audit and evaluate educational and professional practice and education programmes/materials
  •  Represent Bear & Alligator Ward at Trust wide and external meetings and in response to Trust wide quality improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to Trust wide policies, procedures and educational initiatives as indicated.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with all related clinical areas, academic partners, professional bodies and organisations.
  • Maintain own awareness of current clinical and professional issues

  • NMC Registered Nurse (Child/Adult)
  • Evidence of on-going dynamic continuing professional development within a relevant speciality linked to demonstrable clinical competencies and level 6/7 academic study within the speciality
  • Possession of a relevant degree/in the process of obtaining
  • Supervisor and Assessor training/qualification
  • Up to date Basic Life Support training/ Paediatric Immediate Life Support training/ equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership or management training
  • EPLS

Experience/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • A considerable amount of post registration experience
  • Experience at Band 6 within a relevant clinical environment
  • Teaching, supervision and managerial experience

  • Excellent specialty knowledge and skills relevant to Bear & Alligator Wards including Caring for CYP in a Critical Care 1&2 environment
  • Understanding of professional and current issues in children’s nursing.
  • Understanding of resource management, health and safety, clinical risk and quality issues
  • Handling child protection issues according to Trust policies and procedures
  • Basic knowledge and use of computers and systems

  • Competent at Caring for CYP who require a Ventricular Assist Device (VAD).
