Job overview

­­­­This is an exciting opportunity to join Psychological and Mental Health Services (PAMHS) at Great Ormond Street Hospital. PAMHS is a large, multidisciplinary service providing both paediatric psychology services to GOSH and specialist CAMHS services nationally.

 

The successful postholder will join the team on a fixed term contract, and will lead the Long Term Health Cluster of Paediatric Psychologists – comprising medical specialties including cardiac, intensive care and cancer services. The team consists of approximately 17 whole time equivalents, with additional trainee clinical psychologists and undergraduate placement students. There is a strong focus on MDT working and excellent relationships are in place with the medical teams who value the input of Psychology.

Main duties of the job

It is an exciting time at GOSH with the development of the Children’s Cancer Centre and the launch of the first ever Mental Health Framework, both of which the postholder will have leadership input into.

 

The postholder will work closely with other Consultant Clinical Psychologist leads across PAMHS to lead the effective provision of services to children with medical conditions, and will form part of the PAMHS senior management team.

Academic/Professional qualification/Training

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 2:1 honours degree in Psychology.
  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical or educational psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996).
  • Registered with HCPC as Practitioner Psychologist
  • Eligibility for Chartered status of the British Psychological Society and membership of Division of Clinical Psychology is optional
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate education or training in a therapeutic modality with specific relevance to Paediatric Psychology

Experience/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Assessed significant experience of working as a qualified clinical psychologist (or equivalent qualification)
  • The ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, including palliative and critical care, complex health needs and medical decision making
  • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients’ psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care co-ordinator and also within the context of a multi-disciplinary care plan.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working as a qualified clinical psychologist in a Paediatric Setting

Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Must be able to provide effective clinical leadership.
  • Experience of supervision and management of qualified clinical psychologists
  • Must be able to plan for delivery of a specialist service, both short/medium and long term, including change management
  • Ability to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situations and severely challenging behaviours
  • Able to provide and receive highly complex, sensitive or contentious information in the context of significant barriers to acceptance, hostility, antagonism or highly emotive atmosphere. Communicating at times highly complex condition related information to patients
