Consultant in Anaesthesia

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.

Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.

Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.

In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

We have a reputation for clinical excellence and high quality teaching and research. We are part of King’s Health Partners, one of eight accredited UK academic health sciences centres. In partnership with King’s College London we have dedicated clinical research facilities including an MHRA accredited Phase I clinical trials unit.

Patients are at the heart of everything we do and we pride ourselves on ensuring the best possible patient experience as well as safe, high quality care. We are proud to have one of the lowest mortality rates in the NHS. Following a comprehensive Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection in 2019 we maintained our overall rating of ‘good’. Our adult community services achieved a rating of ‘outstanding’.

The commitment of our 23,500 staff is key to our success. We are one of the largest local employers and we aim to develop and support all our staff so they are able to deliver high quality, safe and efficient care. The 2019 NHS staff survey results show that we have one of the most engaged and motivated workforces in the NHS. We know this has a positive impact on the care provided to our patients.

We have one of the most ambitious capital investment programmes anywhere in the NHS.

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for three substantive consultant posts in General Anaesthesia. The post holders must be medically qualified, maintain GMC specialist registration, and hold a license to practice.

We are keen to attract motivated, hard-working colleagues who share our vision to maintain a cohesive department focused on excellent patient care and outstanding multidisciplinary teamwork. The posts are most suitable for anaesthetists who have recently completed their specialist training and have some experience working in a busy teaching hospital. There will be several opportunities for candidates with an interest in peri-operative medicine, shared decision-making, research, quality improvement, teaching and simulation, theatre productivity, and leadership.

Main duties of the job

The newly appointed consultants would be expected to work across all general clinical areas at Guy’s and St Thomas' sites, as well as the high-volume, low-complexity hub at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup.

The job entails 10 PAs per week for a whole-time contract, comprising 8 DCC, 1.5 SPA, and 0.5 PA for on-calls.

Clinical activities will include elective theatre work and preoperative assessment clinics. Clinical work will be over 5 days (Monday to Friday) and includes 1 in 10 weeks of weekend work.

On-call emergency cover will be provided for Guy’s site, encompassing thoracic, difficult airway, and renal transplant anaesthesia, unless the candidate’s specialist interests are more suitable for the St Thomas' site (e.g., vascular, GI).

This is an outline program, and you will be expected to discuss and agree upon a detailed job plan, including your personal and professional objectives, with your Clinical Leads before commencing the post

Working for our organisation

The Theatre, Anaesthesia, and Perioperative Medicine (TAP) directorate is one of the largest services at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital and includes the high-volume, low-complexity hub at Queen Mary's Hospital in Sidcup.

The Anaesthesia Department is one of the most exciting departments in the country to work in. Academically, TAP Research has been awarded the Paper of the Year for 2021, and work from TAP has been shortlisted for three BMJ Team of the Year awards in 2021. The department boasts three Professors of Anaesthesia, editors from Anaesthesia and BJA Education, Vice President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCOA), Association of Anaesthetists and RCOA Council members, the current DAS President, and RCOA FRCA examiners, amongst others.

The department is one of the most productive and engaging clinical, academic, and educational departments in the country, with an energetic, forward-thinking, and exciting approach to welcoming new colleagues.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are seeking dynamic and motivated Anaesthetists to join our busy department, providing emergency and elective services. The roles encompass general fields of Anaesthesia across all hospital sites within the Trust. However, opportunities in specialised areas will be available based on appropriate expertise, such as airway management, maxillofacial surgery, vascular procedures, cardiology, obstetrics, major surgeries, renal transplants, regional anaesthesia, orthopaedics, robotic surgery, and urology.

On-call emergency coverage will primarily be for the Guy’s site, covering thoracic, difficult airway, and renal transplant anaesthesia. However, if the candidate’s specialisation aligns better with the St. Thomas site, opportunities in vascular and gastrointestinal anaesthesia may be available.

The post holder will be expected to actively participate in clinical and other service activities with the aim of ensuring a high standard of patient care.

In addition to clinical duties, experience in education, teaching, training, governance, leadership, and research will be considered a significant advantage.

**Please note that the job description is currently being approved by the Royal College of Anaesthetists**
