Clinical Fellow in Anaesthesia

NHS Medical & Dental

Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.

Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.

Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.

In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

We have a reputation for clinical excellence and high quality teaching and research. We are part of King’s Health Partners, one of eight accredited UK academic health sciences centres. In partnership with King’s College London we have dedicated clinical research facilities including an MHRA accredited Phase I clinical trials unit.

Patients are at the heart of everything we do and we pride ourselves on ensuring the best possible patient experience as well as safe, high quality care. We are proud to have one of the lowest mortality rates in the NHS. Following a comprehensive Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection in 2019 we maintained our overall rating of ‘good’. Our adult community services achieved a rating of ‘outstanding’.

The commitment of our 23,500 staff is key to our success. We are one of the largest local employers and we aim to develop and support all our staff so they are able to deliver high quality, safe and efficient care. The 2019 NHS staff survey results show that we have one of the most engaged and motivated workforces in the NHS. We know this has a positive impact on the care provided to our patients.

We have one of the most ambitious capital investment programmes anywhere in the NHS.

Job overview

Applications are invited for a Clinical Fellow in Anaesthesia at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. This 6-month post, with potential extension, is ideal for doctors with at least two years' experience in anaesthesia, intensive care medicine or emergency medicine who are working at approximately CT3 level or above.

As one of the UK's largest anaesthetic departments, we provide exposure to a broad range of specialties including cardiothoracic, vascular, obstetric, paediatric, airway, renal, cancer and major elective surgery. Fellows benefit from a structured training programme with opportunities to develop competencies aligned to ST3-ST5 equivalence and CESR progression.

The role combines training and service provision, with approximately 50% elective clinical activity and 50% participation in the anaesthetic on-call rota. Fellows receive dedicated educational supervision, regular consultant support and career development guidance throughout their placement.

The rota is a 1:8 full-shift pattern, including long days, nights and weekends. This is an excellent opportunity to gain high-quality anaesthetic experience within a nationally recognised teaching hospital.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Fellow will provide safe, high-quality anaesthetic care as part of a multidisciplinary team across Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. Under consultant supervision, the post holder will deliver perioperative care for elective and emergency patients, participate in the resident on-call rota, and contribute to anaesthetic services across Guy's Hospital, St Thomas' Hospital and, where appropriate, Evelina London Children's Hospital.

The post offers structured educational support, including an Educational Supervisor, regular reviews and participation in a modular training programme tailored to individual learning needs. Fellows will have opportunities to develop competencies aligned to ST3-ST5 equivalent practice and CESR progression, while maintaining a portfolio and workplace-based assessments.

The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, quality improvement, clinical audit, research and clinical governance activities. Participation in departmental teaching, simulation training and educational events is encouraged.

Patient safety and trainee development are central to the role. Fellows will receive supervision at all times and work within the limits of their competence. The post holder will be expected to maintain GMC registration, participate in appraisal and revalidation processes, and engage with professional development opportunities, including study leave and CPD funding in line with Trust policy.

Working for our organisation

Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK's leading teaching hospitals, providing specialist and tertiary services across a broad range of clinical specialties. Internationally recognised for excellence in patient care, education, research and innovation, the Trust serves a diverse population across South East London and beyond.

The Department of Anaesthesia is one of the largest in the UK, with over 140 consultant anaesthetists delivering services across Guy's Hospital, St Thomas' Hospital and Evelina London Children's Hospital. Fellows gain exposure to a wide range of specialist services, including cardiothoracic, vascular, obstetric and paediatric anaesthesia, major cancer surgery, renal transplantation, airway surgery and trauma.

As a Clinical Fellow, you will join a supportive educational environment with access to experienced trainers, structured supervision and diverse learning opportunities. Fellows are encouraged to participate in teaching, quality improvement, research and service development activities.

The department has a strong track record of supporting doctors pursuing specialist training and CESR pathways. Each fellow is allocated an Educational Supervisor to support achievement of learning objectives and career development goals.

We are committed to creating an inclusive workplace where staff feel valued, supported and empowered to deliver outstanding patient care while achieving their professional aspirations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated doctors who are committed to developing their careers in Anaesthesia within a supportive tertiary teaching hospital environment.

Applicants must hold full GMC registration with a licence to practise and be eligible to work in the UK. Candidates should have a minimum of two years' postgraduate experience in Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine, Emergency Medicine or another relevant acute specialty, with clinical competencies broadly equivalent to CT2/CT3 level practice.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, communicate confidently with patients and colleagues, and deliver safe, patient-centred care. They should have experience of managing acutely unwell patients within the limits of their competence and be committed to maintaining high professional standards.

We are particularly interested in candidates who have an enthusiasm for education, quality improvement and professional development. Applicants should be able to demonstrate participation in clinical audit, quality improvement activity or clinical governance initiatives and show a commitment to reflective practice and lifelong learning.

Whilst not essential, experience in Anaesthesia, previous NHS experience, completion of the UK Resuscitation Council Advanced Life Support (ALS) course, and involvement in teaching undergraduate or postgraduate learners would be advantageous. Additional experience in specialist areas such as obstetric, paediatric or critical care anaesthesia would also be welcomed.

Candidates with an interest in pursuing higher specialist training, CESR, or further career progression within Anaesthesia are encouraged to apply. We are looking for individuals who are motivated, adaptable and keen to contribute to the educational, clinical and quality improvement activities of a large and dynamic anaesthetic department.
