Senior Clinical Fellow in Electrophysiology

NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Trainee (ST6-8)

Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.

Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.

Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.

In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

We have a reputation for clinical excellence and high quality teaching and research. We are part of King’s Health Partners, one of eight accredited UK academic health sciences centres. In partnership with King’s College London we have dedicated clinical research facilities including an MHRA accredited Phase I clinical trials unit.

Patients are at the heart of everything we do and we pride ourselves on ensuring the best possible patient experience as well as safe, high quality care. We are proud to have one of the lowest mortality rates in the NHS. Following a comprehensive Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection in 2019 we maintained our overall rating of ‘good’. Our adult community services achieved a rating of ‘outstanding’.

The commitment of our 23,500 staff is key to our success. We are one of the largest local employers and we aim to develop and support all our staff so they are able to deliver high quality, safe and efficient care. The 2019 NHS staff survey results show that we have one of the most engaged and motivated workforces in the NHS. We know this has a positive impact on the care provided to our patients.

We have one of the most ambitious capital investment programmes anywhere in the NHS.

We are looking for a Rotational Fellow in Cardiac Electrophysiology, to join an exceptional training programme across our hospitals: Guy’s, St Thomas’, Royal Brompton, Harefield and King’s. Our organisations are leaders in clinical excellence, research and innovation and offer specialist care across cardiovascular.  This Fellowship programme is specifically designed to provide high quality clinical-academic training and development opportunities, beyond traditional education centre limits, working with world leading colleagues across the sites.  As a Rotational Fellow, your training programme will give you vital clinical skills and tools for thoughtful decision-making as you rotate across 3 sites.  There are 4 key areas to the fellowship programme:  Clinical cardiac electrophysiology laboratory, Inpatient cardiac, arrhythmia & device service, Outpatient cardiac arrhythmia & device service, Cardiac Arrhythmia Simulation teaching & development.  With 1 roles starting in October 2025 at St Thomas’ Hospital with the other 2 currently in post at the Royal Brompton Hospital and Kings.  Each fellow will be evaluated at the start of the programme and at 8-month points by the fellowship director. All fellows will be evaluated on their progress and will be provided with appropriate direction by the programme director.  This would suit individuals with enthusiasm, drive and dedication, with clinical skills to complement the team, and leadership ability and career development potential.

This post may close early should we receive a sufficient number of applicants.

Main duties of the job

During you training you will learn how to do:

Complex device implantation,

Laser extraction of cardiac devices,

Cutting-edge technologies for pulmonary vein isolation in atrial fibrillation,

and widely accepted methods like radiofrequency and cryothermal ablation.

Additionally, you will gain exposure to endo and epicardial transcatheter ablation for ventricular arrhythmias and stereotaxis catheter ablation.

Throughout the training programme, didactic teaching sessions will be held as well as opportunities to attend courses. We also provide our trainees with access to Heart Rhythm Society online with >200 hours of online educational CPD and lectures available. Over the last few years we have developed a state of the art Cardiac Simulation Suite at the St Thomas’ site.

Working for our organisation

Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust comprises five of the UK's best known hospitals - Guy's, St Thomas', Evelina London Children's Hospital, Royal Brompton and Harefield - as well as community services in Lambeth and Southwark, all with a long history of high quality care, clinical excellence, research and innovation.

King’s College Hospital is one of the largest and busiest in London, with a well-established national and international reputation for clinical excellence, innovation and achievement. The hospital provides a broad range of secondary services, including specialist emergency medicine (e.g. trauma, cardiac and stroke).

The Partnership brings together the world leaders in heart and lung care and research across Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (including Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals), King’s College Hospital and King’s College London. In leveraging the best from each organisation our goal is to deliver the best cardiovascular and respiratory outcomes for people, wherever they receive care, and to improve the health and wellbeing of populations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Our training programme goal is to empower the Rotational Fellows with vital clinical skills and tools needed to become independent interventional electrophysiologists.

The evolving landscape of cardiac mapping and catheter ablation technologies demands advanced training in complex procedures, and our fellowship is designed to provide precisely that. You will have unique opportunities to delve into intricate procedures such as complex device implantation, laser extraction of cardiac devices, cutting-edge technologies for pulmonary vein isolation in atrial fibrillation, and widely accepted methods like radiofrequency and cryothermal ablation. Additionally, you will gain exposure to endo and epicardial transcatheter ablation for ventricular arrhythmias and stereotaxis catheter ablation.

Our diverse patient population includes adult congenital heart disease, maternal cardiology, and neurocardiology services, offering you valuable experience in the clinical management and invasive treatments of arrhythmias in these specialised areas.

We have access to high fidelity simulation equipment which includes both electronic simulators with preloaded cases across the spectrum of electrophysiology procedures and device implants, as well as use of a phantom heart water bath model which enables real-life catheter lab simulation such as 3D electroanatomic mapping. This post represents a unique opportunity for fellows to both hone their own practical skills but also mentor and train junior colleagues. Fellows whilst on rotation at the St Thomas’ site will be scheduled for 1 session (4 hours) of teaching and development within the Cardiac Arrhythmia Simulation Programme.

There will also be opportunities for research, audit, clinical governance involvement and service improvement.

If you are a dedicated, ambitious, and skilled candidate seeking an unparalleled fellowship experience in Cardiac Electrophysiology, this rotational opportunity at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust awaits you.
