The Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is appointing a Consultant in Anaesthetics with an interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia.
Homerton University Hospital is looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic anaesthetist  with a variety of interests to provide general anaesthetic services and an on call  commitment at the Homerton Hospital. This post has arisen due to expansion of  services. The post is offered on a full time basis of 10 programmed activities, 8 DCC & 2  SPA. The posts include a commitment to an on-call service which covers general,  obstetric emergencies and also support to ICU and A/E which includes care of  acutely ill children.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties
• To provide training and service for the provision of service to the anaesthetic  department. This may include some flexibility of fixed commitments. In  addition, to maintain and develop an environment of clinical and academic  excellence.
• To participate in a rota which facilitates appropriate consultant leadership, and provides on-call cover at night, weekends and during periods of leave.
• To assist in the provision of services within the SWNS directorate, 
demonstrating flexibility and co-operation when required
• To participate in the Directorate's clinical meetings.
Clinical Management & Teaching
• To participate in the professional supervision, management support and 
teaching of anaesthetic and other trainees within the department.
• To assist in the organisation of and participate in teaching sessions for under and post-graduate medical staff and other health professionals.
• To undertake appropriate ‘mentoring’ and appraisal of trainees.
• To assist in the recruitment of trainee medical staff.

The on-call commitment will be solely at the Homerton University Hospital NHS  Foundation Trust, on a 1: 18 basis.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • On GMC’s specialist register relevant to the post or a Specialist Registrar who is within 6 months of being admitted to the GMC’s specialist register by date of interview
  • FRCA or equivalent postgraduate qualificatio
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree or diploma (e.g. MD, PhD)

Relevant experience in specialty/sub specialty

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience in all aspects of anaesthesia
  • Experience in managing Paediatric emergencies & training course (e.g. APLS, PALS)
  • Advanced training in airway management/ENT

Clinical skills

Essential criteria
  • Proven excellent clinical skills and experience
Desirable criteria
  • Track record of adopting new techniques

Leadership and professionalism including quality improvement

Essential criteria
  • Familiar with current structure of the health service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes
  • A proven track record to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and respond appropriately to service need.

Management skills

  • Attendance at management or leadership courses.
Desirable criteria
  • Management of team or programme/project

Teaching and training

  • Proven experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
