This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced band 6 dietitian to join the Homerton Bariatric and Complex Weight Management Service in this developmental post that will support the successful candidate to study supplementary prescribing and to progress into a band 7 role upon qualification.

Within your role, you will be working as part of a multidisciplinary team across the City and Hackney Tier 3 and the Homerton Bariatric Services, supporting complex patients in the pre and post operative pathways.

You will be joining a vibrant and diverse team of expert health care professionals working collaboratively to support patients living with complex obesity. The successful candidate will have a good level of awareness of the social determinants of health, a compassionate, patient focussed approach and a drive for continuous improvement of self and services. Main duties of the job

  • Provide specialist dietetic outpatient assessment input for patients accessing the Trust's Tier 3 and Tier 4 complex obesity care pathways including assessment, pre and post operative bariatric care, Tier 3 lifestyle intervention, and follow up clinics for patients referred to the Bariatric Surgery Service
  • Provide specialist dietetic input for patients following bariatric surgery, manage a specialised clinical caseload and carry out complicated assessment, diagnosis, management and treatment of patients 
  • Utilise digital platforms to provide support to patients before and after bariatric surgery
  • Deliver group education sessions across Tier 3 and Tier 4 pathways including facilitation of patient support groups
  • Undertake assessment and provide specialist dietetic input for bariatric inpatients including calculating and arranging enteral and parental feeding regimes 
  • Liaise with members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure high standards of care including attending and contributing to bariatric multidisciplinary meetings
  • Contribute to service developments in the area of obesity and bariatric surgery and develop, implement and evaluate teaching programmes for patients, nurses and other health care professionals in the hospital and community as required 
  • Provide clinical supervision and support for dietetic students
  • Engage with the trust’s preceptorship framework progressing towards a Band 7 role and undertake further education of supplementary prescribing funded by the Trust

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree or Postgraduate qualification in dietetics (or equivalent) awarded at least 2:1
  • HCPC registered Dietitian.
  • Member of British Dietetic Association
Desirable criteria
  • Member of BOMSS or other specialist interest groups.
  • Advanced study in relevant field e.g., Behaviour change training
  • Student supervisory skills course

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to manage difficult and complex situations calmly and logically.
  • Able to provide clear and effective treatment regimens and advice for patients, their carers and staff, including complex clinical dietetic problems.
  • Able to contribute effectively to MDTs.
  • Awareness of own competency level and how to seek appropriate help.

  • Able to apply Evidence Based Practice principles to own area of work

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Postgraduate clinical dietetic experience of working in outpatient and group settings, including surgery, medicine, and obesity management
  • Experience of working within a team and understanding team dynamics
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate bariatric dietetic experience
  • Postgraduate clinical dietetic experience of calculating and arranging enteral and parenteral feeding regimensworking in an adult inpatient setting.
  • Involvement in student training

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Good knowledge of general dietetics, obesity management and behaviour change principles
  • Knowledge of bariatric surgery and dietetic management before and after surgery
  • Knowledge of NICE and BOMSS guidelines for Obesity and Bariatric surgery and their relevance to dietetic practice
  • HCPC professional code of conduct and BDA guidance on professional conduct and adherence to these adherence to these
  • Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance, audit and evidence based enquiry methods
Desirable criteria
  • Dietetic needs of patients from different ethnic and religious backgrounds
  • Research principles
