Clinical Fellow in Ultrasound & Emergency Medicine

NHS Medical & Dental: Junior Clinical Fellow

Advert

Job overview

We are looking for both Junior and Senior Clinical Fellows to come and join our enthusiastic Emergency Medicine team at Homerton University Hospital.

You can join us in an 80% clinical/20% ultrasound split role as a junior clinical fellow (ST1-3 equivalent), or 60% clinical/40% ultrasound for senior clinical fellows (ST4+).

Main duties of the job

Join our successful programme and gain skills in CORE Emergency Ultrasound and beyond. We are currently running both junior and senior ultrasound clinical fellow posts in the ED – come and join our thriving team. You also have the possibility of studying for a PGCert in Ultrasound alongside your post, with a recognised supervisor with post graduate qualification in ultrasound based in the ED to supervise you.

This post is suitable for a year out of training, or potentially as an OOPT (pending approval). We are advertising for an August 2026 start, to give plenty of notice for those considering time out of programme or wanting to plan ahead. It is well suited to those looking for a year after foundation training to gain experience in EM and ultrasound skills, or to those working towards CESR route entry to the specialist register, and area in which we have a great track record of success. This can involve support with FRCEM final exam progress, QIP, ultrasound sign off and secondment or rotation to gain experience in the acute care common stem specialties. If you are interested then get in touch and discuss what you need and do apply to this post.

Working for our organisation

Homerton University Hospital Emergency Department is an inner city unit that saw over 129,000 patients in 2019/20. We were proud to be given a rating of ‘outstanding’ for the Emergency Department from the CQC, including the following comments “The staff we spoke with were proud to work for the A&E department and felt there was a ‘can do’ attitude within the team. There were processes in place to monitor the quality of the service and respond to areas highlighted as requiring improvement. We saw that learning was shared among the staff team regarding Never Events, incidents and complaints within the department and across the hospital. Staff were encouraged and enabled to attend training courses and further their skills and knowledge to improve the service provided to patients.” The department is a trauma unit and was the designated hospital for receiving athletes from the 2012 Olympic Games.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will join either the senior (ST4+ equivalent) or junior (CT1-3) rota, dependent on previous experience. Clinical work in the ED will include provision of ‘shop floor’ cover, review clinics, as well as clinical support and leadership for the Emergency Nurse Practitioners and trainee medical staff.
