Job overview

Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint 2 x Locum Consultant Haematologist with special interest in General Haematology and Thrombosis . The post is advertised as full-time but applicants seeking a part-time post will be considered.

 The successful candidate will be responsible for the diagnosis and continuing care of planned and emergency haematology patients.

Applicants must have full GMC registration with a licence to practise plus MRCP or equivalent, FRCPath, on the specialist register or within 6 months of Haematology CCT at the time of interview and have experience of managing patients within the area of special interest.

The haematology department is a specialist haemoglobinopathy centre serving over 400 patients with sickle cell disease and a small number of patients with Thalassemia. A wide range of malignant and benign conditions are diagnosed and managed by the team, whilst providing level 1 care. A specialist MPN service with an advanced nurse practitioner has now also been established.  A comprehensive nurse-led anticoagulation service is also available along with an established hospital transfusion service.

Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is also one of the parent trusts for NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership, working in conjunction with Barts Health and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full and specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview)
  • MRCP (or equivalent)
  • FRCPath (or equivalent)
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview
Desirable criteria
  • Other higher degree or diploma (e.g. MD, PhD)

Clinical Experience & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience in Haematology
  • Experience in the provision of a blood transfusion service
  • Excellent clinical skills in Haematology haemato-oncology
  • Experience in running anti-coagulation services
Desirable criteria
  • Haemoglobinopathy experience

Personal Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English
  • Empathy, understanding, listening skills, patience, social skills appropriate to different types of client
  • Good interpersonal skills coupled with an ability to co-operate, persuade and negotiate within a senior clinical and management team
  • An awareness of own strengths and weaknesses coupled with an ability to deploy them effectively
Desirable criteria
  • Computer skills course/certificate

Essential criteria
  • Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and respond appropriately to service need
  • Awareness of the overall business environment in which the hospital operates
  • Understanding of the importance of good clinical coding
  • Knowledge of regulatory frameworks (CPA, CQC, MHRA)
  • Experience of undergraduate and post- graduate teaching
  • Evidence of contribution to effective audit and clinical risk management
  • Understanding of principles and application of clinical research
