Job overview
This is an 18 month training post designed to give the trainee the experience and knowledge to be able to work as a Pharmacy Assistant and is a stepping stone to a wider career in Pharmacy. The trainee is supported throughout training and work experience, and with support, will learn to complete a range of tasks within timescales to a competent standard.
You will undertake and complete the Pharmacy Assistant Apprentice Level 2 with an accredited provider. This will involve working with an assessor to develop a work-based portfolio, undertaking work-based assessments, completing all assignments/projects relating to the Apprenticeship standard and presenting evidence portfolios for assessment within specified time frames.
Apprentices will rotate through the main sections of the Pharmacy Department i.e. Dispensary, Distribution, Stores and Procurement where they will provide support to the technical staff under supervision of the Section Manager(s).
Applicants will be required to complete a numeracy and literacy test on the day of the interview.

Main duties of the job
- You will have a friendly and approachable personality, be willing to work as part of a team and committed to providing the best possible service for patients.
- You will need to be self-motivated with good communication & interpersonal skills. To qualify for this position you will require GCSEs English, Maths or equivalent and good IT skills.
- You will have the opportunity to work in all the main sections of the pharmacy department - dispensary, distribution, stores, procurement and community services – where you will assist in the dispensing of prescriptions, the supply of medicines to wards and departments and assist with the ordering, receiving and checking of medicines from external suppliers. There will be some manual handling involved when working in Pharmacy Stores and Distribution.
- Previous experience of working in a hospital pharmacy is desirable and on the job training will be provided.
- Post holder will be required to work towards obtaining a Level 2 pharmacy qualification via the apprenticeship route.
