Job overview

Due to an internal promotion, an opportunity has arisen to join the Homerton Band 6 rotation on a fixed term contract. The role offers the post holder opportunity to develop experience within our Adult Community Rehab Team, Acute inpatient Team and at the specialist Regional Neuro Rehab Unit based at the Homerton.

The post holder will have the opportunity to develop existing skills in the management of acute dysphagia across a range of conditions, as well as delivering specialist rehabilitation for progressive neurological disorders, stroke and brain injury. There will also be the opportunity to work towards videofluroscopy and tracheostomy competencies.

Rotational Band 6 staff have numerous opportunities for project working, training and working with third sector service providers, supervision of students and junior members of staff.

Main duties of the job

  • To work across acute, rehabilitation and community services as part of a rotational programme.
  • Be responsible for and provide the specialist assessment and intervention to a designated caseload of clients with communication and / or swallowing difficulties in hospital and/or community settings.
  • Participate in the delivery of a Saturday service in the hospital team.
  • Help support patients’ recreational programmes by occasionally working evenings.
  • Supervise junior staff, therapy assistants and students.
  • Actively contribute to the development of the Adult SLT service and services that form part of the rotation e.g. the Regional Neurological Rehabilitation Unit(RNRU) and the Adult Community Rehabilitation Team (ACRT), by taking a lead on projects as required in line with Trust objectives, local policy, patient needs and government agenda.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree level or equivalent qualification in SLT recognised by the RCSLT
  • Current HCPC registration
  • Postgraduate training/short courses relevant to working with adults with acquired communication/swallowing difficulties
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of RCSLT
  • Further study in related area

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to independently assess, diagnose and treat patients presenting with communication / swallowing problems of neurological origin with complex and challenging behaviour and cognitive difficulties
  • Ability to form therapeutic relationships with others who may be under stress and have complex, challenging communication difficulties including behavioural and cognitive difficulties
  • Demonstrate empathy with patients, relatives, carers and colleagues ensuring effective communication is achieved particularly where barriers to understanding exist
  • Ability to reflect and adapt practice to suit individual’s needs
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and reporting skills
  • Analysis and clinical reasoning skills
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Windows applications
  • Demonstrate highly developed auditory and perceptual skills e.g. phonetic transcription, linguistic and acoustic analysis and be able to use these in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients

Experience

  • Substantive level of knowledge & experience in the field of adults with acquired communication and swallowing disorders

  • Experience of facilitating the development of others
  • Experience in managing adults with dysphagia independently
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of complex case management /key-working
  • Outcome measures and other quality issues e.g. audit
  • Experience of meeting Health needs in a inter-cultural community
  • Experience in supervising junior staff and students
  • Experience in videofluoroscopy assessment

Knowledge and Understanding

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of rehabilitation with neurological patients with complex physical, cognitive and behavioural disorders
  • Knowledge of SLT computer packages, apps and AAC devices
  • Principles of clinical governance and evidence based practice
  • Knowledge / Understanding of confidentiality issues
