Job overview

The work of the strategy, research, innovation & improvement directorate primarily focuses on the delivery of the third strategic goal – ‘to build learning, improvement and innovation into everything we do’.  The directorate includes sub-functions of improvement, innovation, strategy & partnerships [to which this role directly relates], sustainability, population health & equity and life sciences.  Each of these sub-functions lead on the development & delivery of key strategic programmes through practical implementation and use of improvement method, capability building and development of partnerships across the specific subject areas which have been increasingly prioritised in the national context.
 
We are seeking a dynamic Strategy, Partnerships & Innovation Programme Manager to support our Executive Director, Prof Bob Klaber, in delivering our ambitious objectives. This role is pivotal in coordinating and implementing our organisational strategy, fostering innovation, and managing key partnerships. 
 
The responsibilities of the post holder are described in detail within the job description. You will play a key role in shaping the future of healthcare delivery, fostering innovation, and building meaningful partnerships that make a real difference to our patients and communities.
 
Interviews will be held on Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th July (virtually). Some candidates may progress to a 2nd interview on Monday 21st July (in person at St Mary's Hospital).

Main duties of the job

Person specification

Education/ qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to degree level
  • Postgraduate qualification or relevant experience
  • Strategy, innovation and/or improvement science qualification or relevant experience
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in implementation of strategic change programmes
  • Completion of formal programme in coaching / mentoring / training delivery
  • Project / programme management qualification
  • Completed research degree (ie doctorate, MD, PhD)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Considerable experience of leading strategic change in a complex environment
  • Experience of working with staff outside the employing organisation to deliver change such as improvements in performance, quality and efficiency e.g. commissioners and patient groups
  • Experience of working with a variety of clinical staff including senior clinicians and clinical academics
  • Experience of the design, development and delivery of programmes or project initiatives
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with other corporate teams collaboratively to improve quality and efficiency of care
  • Experience of supporting change in a politically sensitive environment
  • Experience of working in or with a large, multi-site NHS provider
  • Experience of working with local communities and third sector

Skills/knowledge/ abilities

Essential criteria
  • Able to employ a wide range of tools and techniques to plan, deliver, monitor, evaluate and sustain improvements and change and coach projects teams to use these too.
  • Has an excellent understanding of research and evaluation methods including mixed methods evaluation and wider impact evaluation tools such as return on investment
  • Has sound IT skills (incl email and Microsoft Office packages)
  • Able to manage budgets, including external grant funding and charitable support
  • Able to work in a matrix structure, bringing together different types of expertise to work collaboratively
  • Ability to assimilate and analyse data from several sources (including national benchmarking and other strategic drivers), bringing it into a coherent narrative for project planning and reporting purposes and making recommendations where appropriate.
  • Ability to identify and assess risks (both project delivery and impact of changes) and develop suitable mitigations in partnership with key stakeholders
  • Outstanding writing and presentation skills to be able to clearly articulate key strategic priorities and rationale in a range of different written and other formats.
