Job overview

BARIATRIC

This post will be supervised by Dr Jonathan Cousins - Consultant Anaesthetist (also Service Lead for Imperial Bariatric Centre).

This post could be considered as an OOPE or as a standalone 6- or 12-month post.  It can also be combined with Upper GI Anaesthesia. It would suit a senior trainee/ peri-CCT /post CCT grade as independent practice will an expected /planned endpoint, thus more junior grades are not eligible. The post holder will be expected to join in delivering the education of junior grade anaesthetists and medical students in this specialty area. On completion this post will leave the holder confident and experienced in all aspects of the anaesthetic and peri-operative management of the morbidly obese for both bariatric and non-bariatric surgery.

 VASCULAR 

The role of the clinical vascular fellow is to develop and augment vascular anaesthesia in St Mary’s Hospital, as well as contribute to the department of anaesthesia which is part of a trust that is a well-established world leader in academic and clinical research. 

This post could be considered as an OOPE or as a standalone 6- or 12-month post.  It would suit a senior trainee / peri-CCT / post CCT grade - as independent practice will be an expected/planned endpoint, thus more junior grades are not eligible.

The post holder will work under the supervision of the lead for vascular anaesthetics and other clinical consultant anaesthetists within the department. 

Main duties of the job

BARIATRIC

In addition to clinical opportunities:

       Attendance / Participation at the Bariatric Research meeting held every 8 weeks

       Clinical teaching and experience at Sleep clinic possible

       Learn/ deliver the skills of home-NIV device initiation/ optimisation

       Expectation to submit and present abstracts/posters to SOBA/BOMMS/IFSO as appropriate

       SOBA conference assisting is a potential CV opportunity

       Opportunity to join/ participate in QiA & formal Research projects in Anaesthesia

       Opportunity to join/ participate in Research projects in Bariatric Surgery/ Medicine

       Extensive experience of very deep Neuro-Muscular Block and other ERAS techniques

       Exclusive training in spinal anaesthesia of the morbid and ultra-obese patient group

Following require budget support:

• SOBA conference attendance

• Arrange an expert visiting program to other major UK Bariatric Centres and access to European Centres to compare external practice in this field of anaesthesia

• Visit to an Opioid Free Anaesthesia centre of excellence

 VASCULAR

In addition to clinical opportunities as set out in the Job Description;

Academic output

• There is a strong departmental tradition of performing research and audit in this service and of publishing results

• Previous experience of research and completed audit will be expected

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • On GMC’s register with a Licence to Practice or eligible to apply for GMC registration and a Licence to Practice
  • On GMC’s Specialist Register or within 24 months of being admitted to the register by the date of the interviews or eligible for specialist registration
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • ATLS / ETC or equivalent
  • Evidence of experience in critical care
Desirable criteria
  • MD, PhD
  • APLS or paediatric critical care experience
  • Cardiac or Vascular Experience

Clinical Expertise in Specialty/Sub Specialty

Essential criteria
  • IT Skills and computer literacy
  • Experience of treating patients after injury
Desirable criteria
  • Previous work in a major trauma centre

Leadership/ Management Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions, exert appropriate authority
  • Ability to lead the education of other medical professionals
  • Ability to work across specialties and be collaborative

Teaching and training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates/postgraduates and junior medical staff
Desirable criteria
  • Have set up or lead a teaching programme

Audit

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of principles of clinical audit
  • Experience of clinical audit and quality improvement
Desirable criteria
  • Have presented quality improvement work or audit at a conference

Academic Achievements including Research/Publications

Desirable criteria
  • Peer reviewed publication/s in anaesthesia, intensive care or emergency medicine

Language

Essential criteria
  • Able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
