Job overview

We are seeking to recruit Locum Consultant Anaesthetists to join our department at St Mary’s Hospital. 

St Mary’s Hospital is one of the four London Major Trauma Centres with the anaesthetics service fully involved in all stages of the trauma pathway for adults and children. We provide anaesthesia for a variety of surgical specialties including neurosurgery, orthopaedic and plastics trauma surgery, bariatrics and general surgery, ophthalmology and gynaecology and a variety of paediatric surgical specialties. The hospital has an expanding quaternary vascular surgery department, a busy obstetrics unit and we also provide adult pre-operative assessment clinics for most surgical specialties. On the St Mary’s site, consultants are required to provide anaesthesia for children over the age of five (ASA 1 and 2) for emergency surgeries supported by dedicated paediatric anaesthetists where necessary. 

The successful candidate will provide clinical services in anaesthesia, perioperative care, attending theatre and pre-operative assessment clinics as part of a team-based approach for adult patients. An on call commitment exists and is on a 1:12 (adults St Mary’s).

Main duties of the job

The jobs are paid as 10 PA per week for a whole-time contract – 9 DCC and 1 SPA. The post holders will work a 10 PA contract, including delivery of acute care out of hours for surgical specialties including Vascular Surgery, Major Trauma, neurosurgery and obstetrics.

9 PA per week of clinical activities including – pre-operative assessment clinics, elective and emergency theatre work, peri-operative medicine including acute pain management and MDT meetings and on-call activity. 

1 PA per week of Supporting Professional Activities - including audit, clinical governance, teaching, research, educational supervision of junior staff and CPD. 

Adult on-call at the St Mary’s site is on a 1:12 rota. This is remunerated as 1PA with an on-call supplement of 3%

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holders will work a 10 PA contract based at St Mary’s Hospital, joining an on-call rota set at 1:12 (adults). 

We are looking for outstanding anaesthetists with an interest in vascular surgery, major trauma, neurosurgery and obstetrics with significant experience in our other sub-specialties including gynaecology, regional anaesthesia, , perioperative medicine and ophthalmic anaesthesia. 

The successful applicant will become part of our busy department. The workload demands a flexible and responsive service to both emergency and elective work within the operating theatre environment, emergency department and in remote sites including MRI, CT and interventional radiology. 

In addition to a broad range of both elective and emergency clinical work, the post-holder will have ample opportunity to be involved in research, teaching and training, governance and leadership opportunities, as well as QI projects.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GMC registered Medical Practitioner
  • GMC specialist registration or within 6 months of being admitted to the GMC’s specialist register
  • Minimum 6 months experience in Anesthesia in the UK
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent

Knowledge/ Skills

Essential criteria
  • Advanced Anaesthetic training in subspecialty areas relevant to job plan
  • Able to take responsibility for clinical care of complicated patients for major surgery
  • Training and/or significant experience in the management of patients for emergency surgery in the sub-specialty areas undertaken by the Trust including vascular surgery, major trauma and general work.

Leadership/ Management Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions, exert appropriate authority
  • Have proven skills in leading, motivating, developing and managing the performance of colleagues.
  • Management of staff

Teaching & Training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates / postgraduates and junior medical staff equivalent to RCOA stage 3 level.

Audit

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of principles of clinical audit and QI equivalent to RCOA stage 3 level.

Academic achievements including publications

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of achievement appropriate to appointment at consultant level at ICHT.

Language

Essential criteria
  • Able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
