Job overview

The postholder will be an important member of the Trust's Cancer Pharmacy team, providing and developing a comprehensive service to the Cancer directorate.

Responsibilities include the provision of a clinical ward pharmacy service to the cancer wards, supporting oncology outpatient clinics, verification of systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) prescriptions, independent prescribing, managing drug funding applications and clinical support to clinicians and other health care professionals. The role also includes line management of rotational staff.

The post-holder will also be involved with the training of doctors, nurses and pharmacists in the safe use, screening and prescribing of SACT. 

Main duties of the job

  • To ensure that service provision is flexible and responsive to patient and service needs.
  • To ensure the safe, clinically effective and cost efficient use of drugs. Effectively and in accordance with Trust policy, standard operating procedures and medicines legislation.
  • To assist the Senior Lead Pharmacist Cancer in the provision of clinical pharmacy services to patients within the oncology departments with priorities to ensure the safe, clinically effective and cost efficient use of medicines.
  • To participate in oncology ward rounds where appropriate and clinical meetings as specified by the Senior Lead Pharmacist Cancer in order to provide pharmaceutical advice to prescribers and other health care professionals
  • To deputise for the Senior Lead Pharmacist Cancer in their absence
  • To liaise with external agencies to ensure safe, timely and appropriate supply to patients where appropriate
  • To supervise rotational band 6 and 7 pharmacists
  • To undertake continual professional development and maintain a CPD portfolio in line with requirements of professional body including continuing education and attendance at appropriate courses and study days

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • Masters Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent
  • Member of the GPhC
Desirable criteria
  • BOPA Digital SACT verification Passport or equivalent
  • Independent Prescriber

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Three years post-registration training and experience in hospital Pharmacy This must include a solid grounding in all aspects of hospital pharmacy practice (medicines information, aseptic services, ward services and dispensing
  • Demonstrate the ability to appropriately recommend, substantiate and communicate therapeutic options for patients
  • Experience working in Cancer services
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of using electronic prescribing systems e.g. Cerner
  • Experience of managing change

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Able to evaluate and improve service quality
  • Ability to influence senior pharmacy and medical staff, the multidisciplinary team and management
  • A good understanding of national and local priorities
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership and delegation skills
