Job overview

Hammersmith Hospital is ICHT’s specialist hospital based in East Acton and renowned for its strong research connections.  It offers a range of services including renal, haematology, cancer and cardiology care, and provides the regional specialist heart attack centre.

A7 is a 25-bedded inpatient cardiology ward incorporating a 5 bedded coronary care unit (CCU) and 20 step-down beds including monitoring and telemetry. A7 is the predominant receiving unit for patients admitted via our 24/7 Primary PCI and arrhythmia service that covers North West London ICS.

All staff work across both the CCU and our step down ward.  CCU cares for higher acuity patients post PPCI, complex cardiac arrhythmias, intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), TAVI, and patients on non-invasive modes of ventilation (NIV). ECG interpretation skills are essential for these posts.

The unit is fast paced and our Band 6 team both lead and co-ordinate; out of hours they are the point of contact and hold the bed bleep for cardiology.

We are looking for experienced cardiology nurses who are knowledgeable, ambitious and safety focused, and who put the patients at the centre of all they do.  The Directorate will offer further development that can be tailored to the successful candidate/s and include both leadership and clinical components. Informal discussions welcomed.

Main duties of the job

  • Providing high quality, effective, individualised nursing care to patients by assessing their needs and developing, implementing and evaluating care plans without supervision.
  • The post holder will be expected to liaise appropriately with all key members of the multi-disciplinary team and service users related to the specialty.
  • To be responsible for all aspects of patient care including the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of direct patient care with supervision from senior staff.
  • To support the ward manager to monitor the safety and quality of care for patients. Maintaining accurate clinical observations of patients, utilising nursing skills and competencies.
  • To manage a group of healthcare support workers and assign delegated tasks and responsibility as appropriate. Assisting in the teaching and development of healthcare support workers and students, helping them to achieve their learning outcomes.
  • To ensure a positive focused service incorporating patients’ feedback to maintain and improve patient care. To act as an effective role model promoting excellence through practice.
