Consultant Pathologists

Consultant

Job overview

North West London Pathology (NWLP) is one of the UK’s largest and most advanced providers of laboratory diagnostic services. Our UKAS-accredited Cellular Pathology service (ISO 15189:2022) is based at Charing Cross Hospital and supported by state-of-the-art equipment, full sample tracking, voice recognition reporting, and scientist-led dissection. We offer extensive immunocytochemistry, Electron Microscopy, and a Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service at Hammersmith Hospital.

We are recruiting for consultants in Head & Neck, Skin, and Breast pathology, with flexibility depending on the candidate’s strengths. Job-shares and personalised job plans will be considered.

Digital slide scanning and histology reporting are implemented in most specialties, with full rollout due by autumn. The laboratory operates a 6-day working week with extended hours Monday to Friday. A continuous service improvement programme supports evolving clinical needs.

Consultants attend MDTs remotely and are vital in building strong clinical relationships, there may be occasional need to attend in person on any site. As part of an Academic Health Science Centre, we actively support consultants in research, publications, and professional development through taught courses.

Main duties of the job

Post holders will join at least one specialty team, working closely with experienced Specialty Leads based at Charing Cross Hospital. Cross-cover for annual, study, and sickness leave is expected, reflecting our collaborative and supportive team culture.

As part of a UKAS-accredited service, all staff are expected to actively engage with the Quality Management System. Quality improvement is strongly encouraged, with an emphasis on shared learning, particularly when supporting the investigation of adverse events. Turnaround times, workload, and quality metrics are closely monitored, with weekly reports shared across specialty teams to support transparency and continuous improvement.

Our department has a strong educational ethos and is committed to delivering an excellent training environment for doctors in training and scientific staff alike. We are proud to have strong positive outcomes in the GMC training surveys. A scientist-led dissection service and a fully digital frozen section service are in place, alongside the rollout of digital slide reporting across all specialties. Full support will be provided for validation and system training.

The successful applicant will enjoy a dynamic and well-rounded job plan, combining direct clinical care (DCCs) with supporting professional activities (SPAs). This includes case reporting, MDT leadership, teaching, training, CPD, audit, appraisal, research, clinical governance, and contribution to service development.

Working for our organisation

North West London Pathology (NWLP) is an NHS pathology partnership joint venture between Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust and The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
