Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 4 Diabetes Technology Technician/Educator within the Diabetes Specialist team at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHT). This is a newly created post to support patients to the use of their technology to the fullest. A core function of the role is to support the growing numbers of patients using diabetes technology and support the vision of the wider diabetes clinical team.
The diabetes service covers three sites and ICHT is comprised of five acute hospitals. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team with consultants, podiatrists, dieticians, Diabetes Specialist Nurses, Diabetes Specialist Practitioners and other professions, the diabetes team perform a crucial role in making a difference to patients with diabetes. Diabetes is a Tri-site service and working across site should be expected at times. This role requires on site working Monday to Friday.
The successful candidate will be in possession of a healthcare related qualification or have equivalent experience working within a healthcare setting. The post holder will have a high volume of patient contact face to face, remote communication and correspondence within the team and across to primary care if required. The candidate will also have responsibilities for administration processes and contribute to accurate recording – keeping, account set-up of consumables related to diabetes technology and monthly data validation.
Main duties of the job
- To be competent in the application, support, removal and data downloading of in vivo blood and continuous glucose monitoring devices and support patients to use these devices.
- To be competent in teaching patients how to upload and share their insulin pump data.
- To recognise your role in supporting the clinical diabetes team, undertaking clinical responsibilities under the direction of the nurse/educator in charge in the diabetes centre.
- Support the delivery of patient and carer training and education, including use of equipment.
- Encourage and support active healthy life style choices.
- To participate and display a willingness to learn, develop a relevant technical competency / area of interest and keep up to date with current national and local issues and developments.
- To routinely participate in departmental audits with the DSP, and input data as requested.
- To undertake any other such duties as may be required from time to time which are consistent with the responsibilities of the grade.
- To comply with the Trusts and departments policies, guidelines and procedures.

Education/ qualifications
Essential criteria
- GSCE Grades A – C in Maths and English or equivalent.
- NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent or working towards.
- Educated to foundation degree or equivalent level of experience/knowledge
- Life Support
Desirable criteria
- NVQ Level 3 in Clinical Laboratory Support / BTEC in Science and / or track record of effective performance at SATO
Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous experience in healthcare clinical setting for a minimum of 2-3 years.
- Experience as an HCSW/or equivalent involved in direct patient care or relevant health or social care experience at AFC Band 3 or equivalent
- Understanding of blood glucose monitoring/parameters and confidence to escalate clinical results
- Experience of working with Diabetes, patients and their families
- Communicating across different care settings/ care providers.
Desirable criteria
- Experience working in NHS acute trust and/ or multidisciplinary workforce
- Experience working in diabetes / endocrinology and related new technology
Skills/knowledge/ abilities
Essential criteria
- • Able to use technology proficiently and to be able to teach others how to use (devices, mobile phone apps).
- • Able to take responsibility, under supervision of the DSP/DSN, for assigned routine tasks in the clinical and non-clinical setting
- • Able to organise, prioritise and manage own duties and workload and ask advice as appropriate
- • Flexible approach and ability to adapt to changing clinical circumstances
- • Demonstrates ability to work under own initiative without direct supervision.
- • Possess good IT skills, with experience of spreadsheets, e-mail, databases and word processing packages
- • Knowledge of infection control principles and practices.
