Job overview

Are you an experienced speech & language therapist looking to join a well-established SLT Ear, Nose and Throat  Laryngology and Airway service in Central London?  Join us at Charing Cross Hospital, the National Centre for Airway Reconstruction and part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trusts, one of England's eight Academic Health Science Centres.

This post will join a team of 3.0 WTE SLTs designated to ENT Laryngology and Airway Reconstruction based at Charing Cross Hospital, and part of a wider team of over 40 SLTs working across all acute specialities over three hospital sites. We work as part of a supportive and internationally regarded Multi Disciplinary Team.

We provide a specialist dysphagia and voice service for both inpatients and outpatients who have a wide variety of benign ENT conditions including those with airway stenosis and tracheostomy. This post allows opportunities to develop skills in instrumental swallowing and voice assessment.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide comprehensive and specialist therapy assessment and diagnosis for patients with a range of highly complex presentations, by utilising advanced clinical reasoning, evidence-based knowledge, investigate and analytical skills and specialist assessment techniques.
  •  To work both independently and within a team structure, demonstrating leadership to manage own and team caseload. To efficiently manage a caseload and organise this effectively with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.
  • To formulate and deliver an individualised and specialist care plan / therapy management programme based on advanced knowledge of evidence based practice, advanced clinical reasoning skills and a wide range of specialist treatment options. As a specialist clinician to provide a second opinion where required.
  • To support the provision of instrumental assessments on site as clinically appropriate and as required by the service, including identifying appropriate patients, under-taking joint assessments, analysis, reporting and feedback.
  • To work in collaboration with other members of the MDT to provide an integrated service for patients, participating in joint clinics, ward rounds, multi-disciplinary assessment/treatment, family/ carer support and education, attending regular meetings as appropriate.
  • To participate in quality improvement, clinical governance projects, audit and research as required by the Clinical Service Leads.

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Speech & Language Therapy
  • Current HCPC registration as a speech & language therapist
  • Evidence of CPD through maintenance of a portfolio, especially in the relevant clinical area
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of Professional special interest groups relevant to speciality
  • Relevant post graduate training in clinical area i.e. MBSImp
  • Clinical Educators course or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in independently managing dysphagia patients (inpatient or outpatient)
  • Experience in independently managing a caseload of routine voice patients
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working.
  • Experience in implementing evidence-based practice
  • Experience of supervising junior staff members/students
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with tracheostomy patients
  • Experience of running therapy groups
  • Experience of delivering virtual therapy
  • Experience in working within ENT services
  • Experience of working in multidisciplinary voice clinics i.e. joint voice clinic

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Specialist level of clinical skills and knowledge relevant to the management of adults with swallowing and communication (primarily voice) disorders in the inpatient and outpatient settings; underpinned by current models of best practice.
  • Competent Level C dysphagia practitioner (‘RCSLT dysphagia training and competency framework’) ie able to manage a dysphagia caseload independently - or equivalent (eg operating at Proficient Level of SLT EDS Competency Framework 2025)
  • Basic Videofluroscopy competence (equivalent to RCSLT level 2) and/or FEES Level 2a competence
  • Competent in basic computer skills and common programmes i.e. Word, Outlook, internet searches, Excel, Powerpoint
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of videofluroscopy lead competencies
  • Level 3 FEES competencies
  • EEL competencies
  • Advanced communication, counselling and/or motivational interviewing skills
  • Advanced computer skills for presentation and data analysis
