We are seeking a part time 8PA general paediatric consultant in a substantive role to join the dynamic West London Children’s Healthcare Paediatric team with the post based across St Mary’s and Hammersmith Hospitals.
St Mary’s Hospital is a major undergraduate teaching hospital. The Paediatric Department is a large department combining both local, acute and community paediatrics and tertiary paediatric specialities. SMH serves a multi-ethnic inner-city population of approximately 340,000 residents. In addition, children from surrounding local authorities and from further afield are seen at ICHNT. Paediatrics is located on the 6th and 7th floors of the QEQM building and currently comprises three wards. The wider range of outpatients clinics provided here include General Paediatrics, Surgery and Urology, Infectious Diseases, Respiratory, Neurology, Child Development, Audiology, Clinical Psychology, Genetics, Cardiology, Nephrology, Allergy, ENT, Rheumatology, Diabetes and Endocrinology.
The Child Development Service is a multidisciplinary team providing medical diagnosis assessment and therapeutic support to children with a range of developmental health needs. It is led by a Consultant Paediatric Neurodisability and Community Paediatric team. Great Western Ward provides the general paediatric in-patient service plus many sub-specialities.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will participate in on-call ward cover to improve rapid and safe turnover of in patients and to meet acute care quality standards. Currently two consultants cover the ward during the busier 28 weeks of the year, October to April inclusive.
Clinical Training and Support
The post holder will provide clinical training and support for residents and the nursing team; and will receive support from experienced consultants in general paediatrics, emergency medicine, critical care and safeguarding.
Research, Teaching and Training
Research: This post holder will be expected to actively support and to contribute to the research program of the Division particularly in the area of clinical based trials and provide high quality teaching

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post-holder will share responsibility with consultant colleagues to:
- Provide a service to designated hospitals, ensuring the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness while promoting health.
- Maintain ongoing responsibility for patient care in collaboration with consultant colleagues and ensure departmental efficiency in line with the Operational Policy and Strategic Plan.
- Clinically supervise and train junior surgical staff while on service.
- Engage in clinical governance, audit, research, and education within paediatrics.
- Share educational supervision, mentorship, and induction of residents.
The job plan (illustrative in the attachment) includes clinics, attending weeks, and on-calls at St Mary’s and outpatient activities at Hammersmith. A final job plan will be agreed upon appointment.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MRCPCH by examination or equivalent qualification.
- Full GMC registration.
- On the GMC’s Specialist Register OR within six months of CCT at the time of the scheduled interview. Portfolio Applicants (formerly CESR) must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application.
Clinical experience
Essential criteria
- Is able to demonstrate competencies equivalent to the highest specialist paediatric training.
- Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training.
- Valid BLS (Basic Life Support) Training.
Academic
Essential criteria
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit or QI projects, demonstrating an understanding of their role in improving medical practice.
- Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence to improve clinical outcomes.
Management
Essential criteria
- Understanding of management issues, including medical management, clinical governance, service planning, and quality improvement.
Knowledge & Skills
Essential criteria
- Willing to work unsupervised and make decisions.
- Good communication skills, including the ability to communicate bad news.
- Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively.
- Meets the requirements of the GMC’s Good Medical Practice.
