Job overview

We are seeking consultants with expertise in Medical Microbiology to join our team. The Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust Infection team is excited to announce the availability of three consultant positions: two substantive posts and one fixed-term post for six months (to cover a sabbatical). The substantive positions will be based at Charing Cross and St Mary’s hospitals, while the fixed-term position will be located at Hammersmith hospital.

These opportunities are open to consultants at any stage of their career. Candidates must hold FRCPath (or an equivalent qualification) and be registered with the GMC, either on the specialist register for Microbiology (or a related infection specialty) or within six months of obtaining their CCT. 

All positions have received approval from the Royal College of Pathologists.

Main duties of the job

These positions are for 2 full-time NHS consultants (10 Programmed Activities each), though applications are also welcomed from those wishing to work less than full-time. All posts include a second-on-call commitment for Microbiology, with a first-on-call specialist registrar. The post holder will participate in 1:8 weekends of on-site working, with time off in lieu. 

In addition to providing a clinical microbiology service, all consultants will contribute to the management and service delivery of the Northwest London Pathology laboratory, including set days on-site at the laboratory. 

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is an academic health science centre, and the department has strong research links with Imperial College. Although there are no research Programmed Activities directly associated with these posts, successful candidates will be encouraged to develop their research potential.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Charing Cross Microbiology – Responsibilities include OPAT, bacteraemia reviews, developing antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) activities, ITU rounds, and liaising with Infection Control. For those with a specialist interest in mycology, duties will also encompass specialist mycology AMS rounds and a monthly fungal clinic on Mondays, rotating with other mycology specialists. The diagnostic laboratory is located at the CXH site, and the post holder will assist with lab-based teaching for junior doctors. 

St Mary’s Microbiology – Responsibilities include leading ITU and surgical rounds, participating in OPAT service delivery and bacteraemia reviews, supporting the ward inpatient ID team, and liaising with Infection Control. Additionally, this role involves serving as the site infection lead for paediatric services, including paediatric bone marrow transplant (BMT), neonates, and supporting the paediatric ID service.

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Infectious Diseases +/- General Medicine OR Medical Microbiology Or Virology, or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
  • FRCPath or show evidence of equivalent qualification

Knowledge/ Skills

Essential criteria
  • Broad experience in Clinical microbiology and Infectious Diseases
  • IT Skills and computer literacy

Leadership/ Management Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions, exert appropriate authority
  • Have proven skills in leading, motivating, developing, and managing the performance of colleagues.

Teaching & Training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates/postgraduates and junior medical staff

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of principles of clinical audit and continuous quality improvement

Academic achievement

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of achievement appropriate to appointment at consultant level at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

Language

  • Able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
