Job overview
This is an excellent opportunity for nurses to develop in a senior role within obstetric theatres and recovery. They must have a good background of theatre and recovery experience particularly within the maternity, obstetric or gynecological setting.
As a senior nurse you will support a group of junior theatre nurses and work collaboratively with the midwives, obstetricians and anaesthetists.
Working alongside band 7 team leader and matron you will be involved in developing the theatre/recovery service at Queen Charlottes.
We are looking for a nurse who is enthusiastic, motivated and interested in this area of maternity care and wishes to enhance their leadership skills and knowledge to ensure the provision of quality care to women/birthing people and their families both in theatre and recovery.
You will be part of the delivery suite team and be involved in the care of the mother and baby supported and directed by the midwifery team. The Band 6 Theatre Nurse in maternity plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of maternity patients during surgical procedures, contributing to positive outcomes and experiences for both mothers/birthing people and infants.
The staff nurse will work together with the other band 6 to oversee the daily stock of equipment and consumables and liaise with sterile supplies to ensure upkeep of instruments.
Main duties of the job
- To provide high standards of skilled care and support in both perioperative and post-operative areas of the maternity service.
- You will work collaboratively with all members of the theatre, maternity and multidisciplinary team to ensure a safe and effective service is provided.
- The role involves carrying out post-operative care in the maternity recovery area involves and participating as a scrubbed or circulating member of the team within theatre.
- You will work in conjunction with the theatre matron, lead midwife and wider multidisciplinary team to ensure that safe care is maintained within the theatre and recovery environment and be involved in measures to improve the quality of the service.
- You will be responsible for maintaining and monitoring stock levels of theatre consumables and escalating any stock concerns to appropriate personnel.
- The post holder will have oversight of the recovery area, ensuring it clean, tidy and stock levels are maintained.
- As a team member you will work collaboratively with the midwives in caring for the new born baby while supporting the mother and partner in the care of the baby .
- You must demonstrate politeness, kindness and sensitivity in dealing with women/birthing people, visitors/relatives and colleagues.

Education
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse with more than 3 years at Band 5
- Teaching qualification or equivalent experience.
- Evidence of continuous professional development
Desirable criteria
- Post anaesthetic Course Working towards degree ILS (immediate life support course)
- Theatre course
Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous experience of theatre clinical management
- Able to demonstrate knowledge of clinical role in maternity recovery
- Care of the deteriorating patient
Desirable criteria
- Critical Care experience
- Experience in recovery/HDU
- Use of MEOWS
- Familiar with PCA/epidurals for pain relief
Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to solve problems and contribute new ideas
