Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Ophthalmology department at Imperial College Healthcare Trust for a locum consultant to support the Cornea service for 18 months.
This post is based in the Ophthalmology directorate across Charing cross and Western eye hospital sites and the post holder will work with current body of ophthalmology consultants. The department is very busy, seeing patients from across North West London and beyond.
The service offers high quality treatment for cornea patients, cataract treatment as well as emergency care and the successful post holder will also oversee the training of senior ophthalmology trainees who are suitable to be assigned to support these sessions.
There is a very active research unit: ICORG (Imperial College Ophthalmic Group) which is a part of Imperial College’s department of Cancer and Surgery and the team are actively participating in a number of phase 1 to phase 4 trials including surgical trials. The successful candidate will provide glaucoma clinics, a regular theatre list and a timetable as advertised.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work across ophthalmology services.
Main duties for the role will be:
- - Outpatient clinics in cornea
- - Theatre sessions in cornea/high volume cataract theatre
- - Take part in consultant on call rota
- - Emergency department sessions
The WEH ophthalmic emergency department sees approximately 150 patients per day with inpatient care available for those patients who need admission. The department is staffed with North West London Deanery junior and senior trainees, staff grades, associate specialists and nurse practitioners. The successful candidate will be expected to train and mentor all members of the team. The department is also supported by an on-call consultant from the North West London hospitals rota and access to all ophthalmic sub specialty expertise is assured.

The post holder will work with the current cornea consultants at WEH and CXH in the ophthalmology directorate of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
The successful candidate will have the equivalent of 1 theatre list per week plus cornea outpatient clinics to support the activity

Education & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- On GMC’s register with a Licence to Practice or eligible to apply for GMC registration and a Licence to Practice
- On GMC’s Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the register by the date of the interviews or eligible for specialist registration
- FRCOphth /MRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmic qualification
Knowledge/skills
Essential criteria
- Be near to OR completed Higher specialist training in ophthalmology
- Demonstrable experience of managing patients with corneal disease
- Surgical management of corneal pathology and high proficiency in cataract surgery of wide complexity
- Post CCT corneal Fellowship experience with the ability to perform all types of corneal graft surgery.
- Highly proficient at cataract surgery, managing vitreous loss and training in intra ocular surgery
- Extensive knowledge of corneal disorders and their management.
- IT Skills and computer literacy

- Evidence of achievement appropriate to appointment at a consultant level at ICHNT

- Candidates are able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
