Job overview

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Matron for General Paediatrics to lead our paediatric services with excellence.  

As a senior nursing leader, you will oversee the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care, ensuring clinical standards, staff development, and operational efficiency.

Main duties of the job

•    To provide the operational management responsibility for the following areas and to oversee the delivery of high quality, safe and effective care focused on improving outcomes and experiences for patients, families and carers.
•    As a key member of a multi professional team, ensure appropriate referral and discussion with other members of the team to optimise patient care.
•    Ensure that patients are assessed, have care plans that are implemented and evaluated in accordance with Trust’s evidence based procedural documents.
•    To have local open and transparent communication channels that support the ward team to do the right thing for people we care for, to be bold when they have good ideas and to speak up when things go wrong.
•    Act as a clinical expert within sphere of work, incl. Chemotherapy and Paediatric Bone Marrow Transplant competence.
•    Have continuous responsibility and providing visible professional leadership and line management for a team of nursing and support staff.
•    Ensure staffing is in line with Trust policy.
•    Manage budgets and resources efficiently and effectively.
•    Be responsible for the safety and cleanliness of the clinical environment.
•    Champion a culture of learning and quality improvement in the clinical area.

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse/RN Child/RSCN
  • Post registration qualification in specialty
  • Educated to postgraduate diploma/degree level or equivalent experience
  • Management certificate or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • MSc/MRes or working towards this qualification
  • Leadership or Management qualification (or working towards this qualification)

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience at Senior Charge Nurse/Sister Band 7 level within specialty
  • Experience in managing complaints and quality assurance
  • Experience and knowledge of quality, standard setting and audit
  • Budget management experience
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence in Quality Improvement/Project Management
  • Has introduced a Change in Practice
  • Evidence of Research / Publications

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to lead a large team
  • Organisation and management skills, i.e. Negotiating skills, Team building skills and Appraisal skills
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to undertake surveys or audits, as necessary e.g. audit of clinical incidents
Desirable criteria
  • IT Skills (Including proficiency with Microsoft Office Packages and accurate, fast typing skills)
  • Capable of working strategically (business planning, service improvements, strategies for infection control)
