Job overview

This post is a Trust grade position at SpR level and is one of three Bone Marrow Transplant Coordinators within Clinical Haematology, based at Hammersmith Hospital, part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. This appointment will be a twelve month fixed term contract with the opportunity to extension.

Main duties of the job

The Bone Marrow Transplant Coordinators rotate between the autologous and allogeneic transplants, including CAR-T cell therapy once implemented. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising the inpatient and outpatient care of transplant and IEC (immune effector cell) therapy patients and play a key role in the planning and organisation of the transplant/CAR-T programme. Participation in the out-of-hours on-call rota for all patients under the care of the Clinical Haematology team will also be expected

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Bone Marrow Transplant Coordinator is responsible for coordinating patient care across multiple areas – outpatient clinics (including specialty clinics), the inpatient nursing unit and the community – in order to provide continuity of patient care across settings.

Problems following transplant have a significant level of complexity due to both clinical and logistical issues. Independent thinking and a high degree of problem solving and innovation are required to anticipate issues as well as resolve complex and unanticipated problems, applying appropriate interventions to individual patients and patient problems while performing daily tasks.  Organisation and prioritisation skills, as well as timely response to emerging issues are critical components of this role. 

The post is open to candidates who have completed at least three years of a Specialty Training Programme or equivalent. The post is also open to doctors wishing to undertake post-CCT sub-specialty. Soon the department will be able to offer a CESR programme that will be open to candidates.

In future and with agreement with Department the selected candidate may have the opportunity to include other duties as

  • Inpatient management;
  • Outpatient management;
  • Clinical research studies

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Eligible for registration with the GMC by post start date
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full MRCP or equivalent at the time of application
Desirable criteria
  • BSc (or other intercalated degree)
  • MSc/Research MD/PhD

Academic achievements including research/publications

  • Evidence of achievement appropriate to level of appointment

Clinical expertise in Specialty/sub specialty

  • Minimum of 3 years specialist training (or equivalent experience) in Haematology
  • Minimum of one year training experience in internal medicine
  • Understanding of clinical risk management
  • Competent to work without direct supervision where appropriate
  • Appropriate level of clinical knowledge
  • Shows knowledge of evidence-informed practice
  • Shows awareness of own limitations
  • IT Skills and computer literacy
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Critical Care/Renal Medicine
  • Experience of related specialties
  • Exposure to the discipline of stem cell transplantation
  • Evidence of teaching experience
