Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow in Echocardiography to work at Denmark Hill.

The cardiac non-invasive diagnostic department performs over 30,000 non-invasive procedures per annum and 4,000 visits to the CRM device clinic. The Echo department features the latest cardiac ultrasound equipment in an all-encompassing digital echo lab. It provides transthoracic, TOE, 3-D, DSE and stress exercise echo and contrast studies for all specialties in the Trust. King’s College Hospital is a renowned research institution and encourages participation in new and ongoing projects.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for contributing on a full-time basis to the clinical workload of the department and also providing more limited medical support to non-invasive cardiology in general. The post holder will be trained in aspects of clinical and echocardiographic assessment, patient selection, and programming. The successful candidate will also be trained in advanced aspects of Echo and will gain high volume experience. It is one of the busiest Echo departments in Europe and has a good track record for teaching and research.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 You have a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of yourself, work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance responsibilities associated with this post.

 The post-holder has an important responsibility for, and contribution to make to, infection control and must be familiar with the infection control and hygiene requirements of this role. These requirements are set out in the National Code of Practice on Infection Control and in local policies and procedures, which will be made clear during your induction and subsequent refresher training.  These standards must be strictly complied with at all times.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the GMC
  • MB BS (or equivalent)
  • MRCP part 1 (or equivalent)
  • MRCP part 2 (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • PhD, MD (original research)
  • Other degrees/qualifications
  • BSE or EACVI Adult Echo Accreditation or equivalent

Previous experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience in general medicine
  • Extensive experience in cardiology
Desirable criteria
  • ALS (or equivalent) within 2 years
  • Research experience, presentations, publications

Skills/Knowledge/Ability

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of competence in care of cardiac patients at StR level.
  • Fully competent in transthoracic echocardiography
  • Basic PCI experience
  • Evidence of participation and active involvement in an audit project
  • Understanding of clinical risk management
  • The ability to communicate with clarity and intelligibility in written and spoken English; ability to build rapport, listen, persuade, negotiate the ability to produce legible
  • The ability to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions, exert appropriate authority • Empathise with patients and work co-operatively with others
  • Evidence of teaching experience; involvement in organised teaching
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of NHS, clinical governance & resource constraints; mgmt/financial awareness exp of committee work
