Job overview
Post holder will actively provide a reliable special feed preparation service to the Paediatric and Neonatal wards under the supervision of the Paediatric Dietitians and the Neonatal Management team.
Main duties of the job
To prepare, produce and label all special feeds for Child Health Service following SFU and local policy adhering to hygiene and ICP guidance
Safely transport and deliver prepared SF to wards following local and SFU guidelines
Stock control (ordering/collection/delivery) use digital ordering processes, ensure appropriate stock rotation, and ensure stock levels maintained
Audit and documentation using digital pathways, adhering to Risk and Governance policy
Equipment, CSSD and sampling management, environmental audits/ cleaning undertaken

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post-holder will be responsible for the preparation of special feeds, stock control – rotation, ordering and maintaining adequate supplies to all children’s wards and adherence to cleaning guidelines of the Special Feed Unit.
The post holder will ensure special feeds are delivered/transported safely in accordance to SFU guidance and Trust policy
The post holder will, utilising the digital patient record participate in audit, clerical duties, and general administrative duties related to infant feeding.
To work in the special feed unit (SFU) under the supervision and instruction of the Paediatric Dietitians and Neonatal Line Management team.
Following the direction of the Paediatric Dietitians and Neonatal management teams:
To prepare milk feeds for infants (in line with the SFU Policy).To prepare special feeds for older children.
To label all feeds correctly (in line with the SFU policy).
To deliver prepared feeds to ward kitchens and ensure they are stored safely and to dispose of any unused feeds in an appropriate manner.
To clean the milk room:
All equipment used must be cleaned and stored appropriately.
All storage shelves/walls cleaned once a week and deep cleaning - In line with the SFU cleaning guide.
Utilising the digital ordering process order and ensure adequate supplies of all products and equipment used, ensure stock rotation avoiding waste.
Monitor and ensure preparation kits:
- are well stocked, audited and available
- are complete identifying and escalating incomplete sets
- understand and follow the CSSD process for central sterilising of preparation kits
To monitor fridge and room temperature in SFU and help the Lead Children’s Dietitian send samples of milks for microbial analysis when necessary
To keep documentation/records and audits in accordance with the SFU policy.
To liaise with other departments concerned with the smooth running of the milk kitchen eg. nursing staff, catering supplies and porters.
The post-holder will undertake to follow and complete hygiene and ICP practice and audits
To run the training program for nursing staff required to make feeds.
To assist in change in policy or procedures in the SFU where necessary
Management
Using evidence based practice promote guidelines in feeding, milk storage and use of donor milk to staff and participate in their update.
To ensure that all Trust and local policies, protocols and procedures are adhered to by colleagues as appropriate
To work within and support the multi-disciplinary team and maintain effective communication and professional relationships with all areas within the Care Group and with associated clinical areas within the Trust To participate with the monitoring of standards of hygiene and cleanliness within the milk kitchen
To share knowledge and skills developed with other members of the multi- disciplinary team
To complete audits as required both locally and nationally related to the role
Person specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Literacy and numeracy skills to NVQ level 3 in Health Care or equivilant
- Food Hygiene Certificate
Desirable criteria
- A recognised computer or secretarial course
Knowledge and experience
Essential criteria
- Able to evidence experience in specialist milk/food preparation
- Able to evidence experience with stock management, rotation and ordering
- Able to evidence experience supporting, assessing, teaching and training staff
- Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team
- Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
- Experience working within the NHS
