Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Division of Liver, Endoscopy, Upper GI surgery and Gastroenterology for a dynamic and forward thinking individual to join our experienced team. This maternity locum post will be split between hepatology and neuroendocrine tumour service. Hepatology has close links with the Gastroenterology Department. There are close links with Radiology, Histopathology and Liver Unit. The Neuroendocrine Tumor services works closely with Hepatobiliary surgery, radiology, nuclear medicine, cardiothoracic surgery, biochemistry and respiratory services. The Institute of Liver studies provides subspecialist areas of expertise and promoting regional and national key opinion leaders as well as inter- disciplinary support for specialist teams within the Trust. The Kings College Hospital (KCH) NET service is one of the leading centres in Europe for the management of patient with NETs. In 2012 King Health Partners in affiliation with Kent Oncology and Hampshire Hospitals was awarded the Centre of Excellence status by the European NET Society. KCH acts as the referral hub for the centre. Currently over 350 new referrals are seen a year and over 900 patients in active follow-up at the Kings site alone.

Main duties of the job

· The provision of a first-class clinical service.

· Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty.

· Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King’s College London / KHP

· Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).

· Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitioners as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.

· Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Group’s Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.

· Provide 24 hours, 7 days a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues’ periods of annual leave and short-term sickness as detailed in your contract.

· Carry out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.

· Provide a high-quality care service to patients. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.

· Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, Clinical Governance programmes and Learning from Deaths.

Working for our organisation

The Institute of Liver studies was set up by the late Professor Roger Williams in 1966, and since then has stood for excellence in liver clinical care and research. It provides perhaps the most comprehensive liver disease service in the world.

The Liver Transplant programme, Adult and Paediatric, is one of the largest (>200 cases p.a.) and most prestigious in the country offering ground breaking techniques such as split liver, the use of auxiliary livers and machine perfusion. Complementing the transplant programme is a large and innovative service in hepatobiliary surgery (HPB).

The Liver ITU provides comprehensive service for the management of critically ill patients with liver disease (acute liver failure, decompensate chronic liver disease, hepatobiliary surgery and trauma and liver transplantation) and has a reputation for innovative research into novel clinical treatments such as extra corporeal liver support. The ITU facilities housed in 19 bed area in close proximity to the liver wards, theatres and laboratories.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a senior employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trusts patients. Integral to these responsibilities is the

following:-

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of Hepatology

patients at King’s College Hospital.

2. With colleagues, to run and further develop the inpatient and outpatient service for genetic liver diseases. To implement innovative care delivery models to optimise patient care and reduce in-patient stay. These include the use of care bundles, ambulatory care pathways, hot clinics and the increasing use of tele-medicine including regional MDT meetings with referrers.

3. To further develop working relationships with referring colleagues in South East England. Various methods of working are envisaged including satellite clinics in key referral centres and increasing use of telemedicine and IT.

4. To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Hepatology department.

5. To take an active role in clinical research.

6. Provide clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.

7. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.

8. Contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust’s R&D framework.

9. Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.

10. Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the department’s/ Division’s Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.

11. Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).

12. Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post-qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.

13. Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.

14. Undertake Divisional management duties as agreed with the Divisional/departmental Manager/Clinical Director.

15. Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.

16. Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety. Further information in job description.
