Job overview
We are looking for a full-time specialty dentist (this is a replacement post) to work within special care dentistry based at Kings college Hospital ( Denmark Hill site) to provide dental treatment under sedation (intravenous and inhalation sedation) or local anaesthesia. Treatment under general anaesthesia is provided on a weekly basis. The post holder will be required to support the GA service.
Main duties of the job
- Together with other colleagues, to provide a high-quality care service to patients. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.
- Shared responsibility with other colleagues for covering colleagues’ periods of annual leave and short-term sickness as detailed in your contract.
- Responsible for contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
- Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group’s management team where part of the service structure.
- Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, Clinical Governance programmes and Learning from Deaths
- Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
- Fostering and developing projects to ensure that the momentum of post-qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
- Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced.
- Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.
Working for our organisation
The Department of Community Special Care Dentistry forms part of the Dental Care Group of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and has been Consultant-led since 2002.
The Department is currently commissioned by the NHS England to provide special care and community dental services across Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham, Kingston, Richmond, Wandsworth, Croydon, Merton & Sutton. Additionally, the Department also provides special care dental care services within the Dental Hospital for special care patients including medically complex patients (including oncology, transplant, haematology, and cardiac, patients), those who require treatment under intravenous sedation or general anaesthesia, and for bariatric patients. Within the community the department also provides a mobile dental service for those experiencing homelessness across Lambeth & Southwark. The appointee will be expected to assess and treat urgent cardiac cases prior to surgery.
The postholder is a key employee whose role will be to assist in providing first class healthcare to our patients and effective professional leadership to a diverse and highly committed workforce.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post will be based at King’s College Hospital Denmark Hill site and there is opportunity to provide dental treatment at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. The proposed Job Plan is attached. A definitive Job Plan would be agreed with the successful applicant.
As an employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients. Integral to these responsibilities is the following:-
· The provision of a first-class clinical service
· Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King’s College London
· Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies
· Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s service plans
· Maintaining the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Care Group or the Trust

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- GDC registerable dental qualification
Desirable criteria
- One or more of the following qualifications: MSc FDS RCS MFDS RCS MSCD RCS (Ed) DSCD RCS (Eng))
Training and Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in the dental management of medically compromised patients.
Desirable criteria
- Contribution to guidelines or protocols for delivering oral healthcare to patients that require special care dentistry
Research and Publications
Desirable criteria
- Publication of relevant review articles or case reports. Experience of clinical research.
4. Training and Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of provision of dental treatment under general anaesthesia and all appropriate conscious sedation techniques.
11. Personal Skills and Attributes
Essential criteria
- Effective communicator, able to work in a close-knit team and co-operate with all dental, medical and paramedical staff. Flexible, able to cover colleagues’ absence
