Medical Retina Service
The Medical Retina service is one of the largest services in Moorfields and works across the main City Road site as well as satellites (Ealing, Northwick Park, Stratford, SLG, St George’s, Croydon, St Ann’s). The medical retina consultants within the service are;
The service also runs a busy and innovating digital service with more than 50000 asynchronous or virtual reviews which includes rapid access urgent cases, stable monitoring of retinal diseases, patient initiated follow up appointments.
THE POST
The post advertised is for a 12-month fixed-term full-time Medical Retina Specialist Grade Position. This post is located at Moorfields City Road and the satellite services in Moorfields at Ealing and Northwick Park.
Main duties of the job
DUTIES
Provide High Quality Care to Patients
· The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC specialist registration and hold a licence to practice
· To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
· To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
· To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.
· The clinics (RTU/Face to face/asynchronous/Virtual) will involve both new and follow up patients with bookings at 8-15 per clinician per session depending on complexities and grade. The clinics will usually be supported by medical retina fellows, trainees, optometrists and/or nurses and supervision and training of juniors is expected.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Performance Management
· To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas:
· Clinical efficiency e.g. timeliness indicators, clinical indicators and the development of ambulatory pathways.
· Quality of outcomes e.g. infection control targets, reducing re-attendance rates.
· Financial management e.g. identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes and participating in efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively e.g. managing locum agency spend, monitoring and managing the drug budget to target, ensuring accuracy of clinical data for the team.
· Operational efficiency e.g. demand management.
Medical Staff Management
· To work with colleagues to ensure junior doctors’ hours are compliant in line with EWTD and New Deal.
· To ensure that adequate systems and procedures are in place to control and monitor leave for junior medical staff and to ensure that there is appropriate cover within the clinical areas, including on-call commitments
· To participate in the recruitment of junior medical staff as and when required.
· To participate in team objective setting as part of the annual job planning cycle.
· To be engaged in the process of annual appraisal and revalidation of all doctors in training, Trust doctors, Clinical Fellows and non-consultant grades as delegated by the Clinical Director/Divisional Manager.
Governance
· To review clinical outcomes in designated area using external benchmarking data where appropriate, to identify and advise variances to the Clinical Director.
· Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented.
· To work closely with the Directorate, Patient and Public Involvement panels in relation to clinical and services developments as delegated by the Clinical Director.
· To ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior medical staff and updated on a regular basis.
· To keep fully informed about best practice in the speciality areas and ensure implications for practice changes are discussed with the Clinical Director.
· To role model good practice for infection control to all members of the multidisciplinary team.
Leadership and Team Working
· To demonstrate excellent leadership skills with regard to individual performance, clinical teams, the Trust and when participating in national or local initiatives.
· To work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and Partners as required.
· To chair regular meetings for the specialties.
· To resolve conflict and difficult situations through negotiation and discussion, involving appropriate parties.
· Adhere to Trust/departmental guidelines on leave including reporting absence.
Person specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- FRCOphth / MRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmic qualification.
- Full GMC registration (with a ‘Licence to Practise’).
- Completed a minimum of 12 years of Ophthalmology experience.
Desirable criteria
- Higher Degree (e.g. MD or PhD).
Further training and knowledge
Essential criteria
- Completed Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology.
- Undertaken recognised Fellowship Training in Medical Retina.
Desirable criteria
- Received training in educational or clinical supervision as defined by the GMC.
- Awareness of current issues affecting the NHS & UK Higher Education & the possible associated implications for Moorfields/UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.
Skills and Ability
Essential criteria
- Audit and research skills.
- Excellent clinical competence in medical retinal procedures.
- Track record of publications in peer-reviewed scientific and clinical journals.
- Ability to lead and co-ordinate clinical teams.
Desirable criteria
- Excellent surgical competence and skills in cataract surgery.
- Understanding of commissioning requirements and NHS Finance.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Clinical leadership and management experience in developing and delivering new services/pathways.
- Experience of multi-site high volume medical retina digital clinics.
- Involvement in clinical leadership roles such a participation in QIPP projects & service improvement projects.
- Active involvement in clinical audit with evidence of implementing change.
Desirable criteria
- Excellent teaching & presentation skills.
