Job overview

We are seeking a dedicated nurse to develop and manage an integrated role focused on the care of Corneal and External Service ophthalmology patients and their families.

The post holder will work according to the Nursing & Midwifery Council Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines. They will be responsible for assessment of care
needs of patients, planning programmes of care, implementation, and evaluation of these programmes with direct supervision. At times they will have management responsibility for being in-charge of the outpatient department and supervising junior members of staff.

They will be a key member in relation to the development of practice within the department. They will be working independently/autonomously and at times without direct supervision, accountable for their own professional actions. They will ensure the safety and well-being of service users, and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of
person-centred care principles.

Main duties of the job

Develop an integrated nursing role surrounding the management of Corneal and External Service ophthalmology patients and their families.

Attend and contribute to departmental meetings, internal and external ophthalmology, and Corneal and External Service and related focus groups.
Responsible for assessing the care needs of the patient group, through clinical assessment, whilst also considering psychological and sociological aspects of need.

Evaluate the quality and effectiveness of care given, implementing changes to ensure high standards of appropriate nursing care.

Create and promote a partnership approach between the patient, careers and all professionals involved in their care (including outside agencies).
Provide leadership and supervision, surrounding Corneal and External Service care, to less experienced staff working across the Corneal and External Service outpatient departments, Emergency and corneal cross-linking service.

To be involved in carrying out nursing extended roles, such as providing informed consent for patients undergoing corneal cross-linking and investigations, performing telephone consultations for post operative patients, and supporting the delivery of technician led synchronous and asynchronous clinics in line with the Corneal and External service’s future plans for delivery care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are seeking a dedicated nurse to develop and manage an integrated role focused on the care of Corneal and External Service ophthalmology patients and their families.

Key Responsibilities:


   Clinical Leadership: Assess and address the comprehensive care needs of patients, considering both psychological and sociological factors.

•    Quality Improvement: Evaluate and enhance the quality and effectiveness of nursing care, ensuring high standards are consistently met.

•    Collaborative Care: Foster a partnership approach among patients, careers, and all involved professionals, including external agencies.

•    Team Supervision: Provide leadership and supervision to less experienced staff within the Corneal and External Service outpatient departments, Emergency, and corneal cross-linking services.

•    Extended Nursing Roles: Engage in extended nursing responsibilities such as obtaining informed consent for corneal cross-linking procedures,   conducting postoperative telephone consultations, and supporting technician-led synchronous and asynchronous clinics in alignment with future service delivery plans.

  • Facilitate the provision of excellent nursing care and work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Be a role model and a good leader.
  • Engage with research and evidence-based practice.
  • Ensure that clinical care of patients and others using the service is efficient and of high quality.
