Job overview
This exciting, new and developing role is part of the perioperative team working with Surgeons, Anaesthetists, Registered Nurses and Allied Health Care Professionals in our Theatre Complex.
Working with proximal supervision from a registered nurse/practitioner the post holder will be an integral part of the multidisciplinary team providing direct and indirect care to the patient.
The post holder will perform circulating and scrub duties for a range of surgical cases as well as supporting the anaesthetist in the administration of local anaesthetics, monitoring of the patient intraoperatively and postoperatively.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Duties
Contribute to the delivery of high quality evidenced based care
Work to deliver a customer focused culture acting as a role model.
To participate as a member of the theatre team as circulator in surgical procedures and carrying out safety checks with regards to swabs, instruments and needles working as the second checker.
To prepare, and make ready for use all equipment and instrument trays required for surgical procedures.
Working as delegated by the registered practitioner ensure the correct care, labelling and dispatch of laboratory specimens according to Trust and local policies.
Ensure written records are accurate and legible, enter data into theatre IT system, taking action in situations where the quality of the data may be affected.
Maintains personal contact with patients, relatives and visitors – being sensitive to their needs for courtesy, dignity and privacy and ensuring an appropriate professional environment at all times.
Foster effective and efficient working relationships across the multidisciplinary team
Undertake surgical scrubbing, gowning and gloving procedures aseptically.
Lay and prepare surgical instrumentation for use.
Working alongside the surgeon, safely passing the surgical instruments and materials within the sterile field in order to ensure safe and efficient completion of surgical procedures.
To prepare the anaesthetic room for the administration of local anaesthetics.
To prepare the patient for the administration of local anaesthetics.
To assist the anaesthetist/subtenons practitioner in the administration of local anaesthetics, supporting in the observation of the patient during this procedure.
To support in the monitoring of the patient intraoperatively and post operatively, recording accurately and legibly the patients vital signs.
To assist in the recovery phase of the patient’s journey, ensuring that notes and relevant paper work are completed. Assessing the readiness of the patient to return to the ward.

Education/Qualification
Essential criteria
- RNA Registered Nurse Associate on the NMC register.
- Evidence of literacy and numeracy to GCSE Level
- Committed to own personal development
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in working as part of a multidisciplinary team in a theatre environment
- Relevant Experience in Ophthalmic Surgery
Desirable criteria
- Supervision of Junior Staff
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Appropriate level of clinical skills and knowledge
- An awareness and understanding of policy and practice relevant to speciality
