This post is for 1.0 WTE Consultant Psychiatrist working within the South Camden Core Community Mental Health Team as work progresses with the transformation of community mental health services in line with the NHS Long Term plan. 

The post available as a substantive role that has become vacant after the current post holder moves to a different trust.

The post-holder will be part of a multidisciplinary team which includes both statutory and voluntary sector roles and provides holistic care to patients in a primary care setting aligned to the South and Central Primary Care Networks in Camden.

For the South Core Team, Following initial triage, signposting and advice giving to referrers, approximately 60-70% are offered appointments with the team. The post holder will work alongside three other consultant colleagues and other members of the multi-disciplinary team to carry out assessments.

It is anticipated that the post holder will conduct 41-2 assessments per week and hold a short-term caseload of up to 20-30 patients at any one time with GPs remaining as main case holders within this collaborative model.

The primary record-keeping system for the service is RiO, general electronic patient record system of the Trust. Read only access to EMIS is available to senior clinicians to aid communication and integration with other primary care services.  

The post-holder will be provided with appropriate technology (laptop, mobile) in order to facilitate agile working across multiple sites. The team has office space at the Margarete Centre with dedicated admin support.

The North London NHS Foundation Trust is the main mental health service provider in North London. We provide care and support to a population of 1.6m people in North London and also provide a range of more specialist mental health services to a wider population across London, surrounding counties and some national services. They include: General Adult Services (Inpatient Services, Crisis Services, Community Services, Talking Therapies), Rehabilitation Services, Children and Young People Mental Health Services, Older Adult Services, and Learning Disabilities and Autism Services. Our specialist services include Forensic and Prisons Services, Substance Misuse Services, the Perinatal and Maternal Mental Health Service, Specialist Eating Disorders Services, and Veterans’ Mental Health Services. We are starting from a good place with both of our organisations having been rated as ‘Good’ during our latest Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspections.

The specific clinical and managerial responsibilities of the post-holder will be as follows:

•    To provide advice and support to South Camden GPs, and other practice staff, regarding the assessment and management of the mental health difficulties of patients registered with their practices. This may be done through case discussions, joint consultations and bespoke training, as appropriate.

•    To provide consultant input and clinical leadership to the South Camden Core Team.  

•    To assist with diagnosis, formulation, medication reviews, Dialog+ care planning, management plans, risk assessments, safety plans (Formerly crisis plans), and self-help plans as required for these patients referred to the team.

•    As necessary to provide direct clinical assessments of patients registered with the South Camden GP practices, and to provide follow up as appropriate.

•    To assist in the prioritization (“triage”) of new referrals to the service.

•    To maintain effective communication with GPs, primary care staff, patients and their carers.

•    To work flexibly within timetabled working hours, so that urgent clinical matters can be prioritised. 

•    To carry out Mental Health Act and domiciliary assessments as required.

•    To play a key role in implementing improved linkage between primary and secondary care services.

•    To liaise and work closely with local NHS Talking Therapies (Formerly IAPT services for anxiety and depression (also provided by NLFT) and other primary care providers in order to provide a joined up primary care mental health service.

•    To liaise and work closely with local voluntary services as part of the new model of core community teams

•    To provide clinical input, where necessary, to multi-disciplinary case conferencing around difficult patients being managed solely in primary care.  

•    To engage with local service user participation models.

•    To participate in management activities and governance processes related to the Core Teams, including audits and quality improvement projects. 

•    To play an integral role in the performance of the team, the further development of the service, and the development of clinical pathways and priorities of the service line.

Education/Qualifications/Registration

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice. Must be on the specialist register or within 6 months of gaining a Certificate of Completion of Training
  • Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility) - qualifies to act as a Responsible Clinician
  • Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing
  • Shared Services training up to date to be an approved trainer/clinical supervisor

  • Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry
  • Other relevant post-graduate qualification (incl. those gained outside UK
  • Trained as an Educational Supervisor for doctors in training
  • Training as a Consultant mentor

Knowledge & Experience

  • Knowledge and observance of the requirements and duties of a doctor laid down by the GMC in Good Medical Practice.
  • Clinical knowledge of the full range mental disorders.
  • Experience in the assessment of complex clinical cases involving severe and enduring mental illness and significant risk histories and the ability to assertively engage and manage such cases.
  • Expertise in a comprehensive range of evidence based treatment and case management options including pharmacotherapy.
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and safeguarding practices
  • Experience in work place based assessments of doctors in training
  • Knowledge of clinical commissioning and external organisations that interface with an NHS Trust.
  • Experience in organising and chairing meetings.
  • Good understanding of Trust governance structures, especially clinical governance
  • An understanding of the role of research within the wider service
  • Willingness to participate in research as appropriate and within the context of the duties of the post

  • Ability to work in a team environment and to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multidisciplinary basis with all levels of staff.
  • Ability to take on the role and responsibilities of the clinical lead
  • Experience in undertaking clinical audit, investigating serious incidents and handling complaints
  • Enthusiasm for pathology and willingness to share knowledge and experience
