Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced staff nurse to join Jade Ward as a charge nurse within the Hospital Division inpatient acute wards at Highgate West Mental Health Centre.
We are looking to recruit a compassionate, qualified, creative and motivated nurses to help deliver person-centred care to our patients.
All applicants must have at least one year post registration experience.
As a charge nurse of an acute ward, the post holder will be committed to working with trauma informed care models/approaches and recovery model, whilst working proactively in the least restrictive manner.

Main duties of the job
Main responsibilities
- Manages the ward on a day-to-day basis at the direction of the Ward
Manager and deputises in the Ward Manager's absence - Co-operates with the Ward Manager to ensure that junior staff participate in professional development programmes and are supervised appropriately within their remit of competency.
- Ensures the confidentiality of their work as outlined in the Trust's policy, the Data Protection Act and NMC guidelines on professional conduct.
- Ensures that junior staff understands the Trust’s policies regarding Health & Safety at Work.
- Maintains an effective working knowledge of the Mental Health Act (1983) and other related legal and statutory frameworks and subsequent
revisions. - Understands, carries out and educates others in the administrative requirements of the Mental Health Act 1983.
- To participate in the duty nurse bleep holding rota.
- When completing staff rotas adopt the most effective use of the Health Roster staff rota system as instructed by the Ward/Unit Manager.
- To support the Ward Manager in ensuring that KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) relating to ward efficiencies are maintained and when required initiate actions to address any shortfalls.

Qualifications/Education
Essential criteria
- RMN or equivalent with post registration experience at staff nurse level in an acute setting.
- Evidence of relevant ongoing professional development
- 1 year in a Staff Nurse post prior to applying.
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of ongoing commitment to CPD.
Skills/Abilities
Essential criteria
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be competent in the utilisation of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Teams and Outlook as minimum.
- Demonstrates an ability to manage and motivate staff of all bandings.
- Demonstrates an ability to successfully manage patients exhibiting disturbed behaviour.
Experience/Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Has an understanding of the physical health needs of people with serious mental illness.
- Demonstrates and knowledge of de-escalation skills and would proactively to reduce the risk of violence.
- Has a detailed knowledge of the MHA, the mental capacity act, CPA and other relevant legislation such as Health and Safety.
- Expert knowledge and experience of care planning within the Primary Nursing system.
- All applicants must have a minimum of one year post-registration experience.
- Experience and evidence in teaching and supporting junior staff members.
- Evidence of report and complaint response writing.
