The North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust is a medium-sized acute and community trust with over 525 beds and over 600 community staff, serving more than 600,000 people living across Enfield and Haringey and the surrounding areas, including Barnet and Waltham Forest.
The hospital has been on its present site for over 100 years and was established as an NHS trust by statute in December 1990. The Trust’s services are provided on the North Middlesex University Hospital site as well as a range of community sites across the London Borough of Enfield, including at partner hospitals. They provide services in collaboration with a range of partners, including local GPs, acute, mental health and other community health service providers across North Central London.
In the year ending 31 March 2022, the Trust reported a turnover of £419.7m and employed almost 4,000 staff. Following the transfer of Enfield Community Services on 1st April 2023, this has increased as we have welcomed over 600 new staff including District Nurses, Community Matrons, Community Physiotherapists, Psychologists and many more across a wide range of adult and children’s community services in Enfield. Applications are invited for the post of Senior Colorectal Fellow for 12 months based in the North Middlesex University Hospital. This post has been approved by the Royal College of Surgeons and the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain & Ireland as part of the RCS Senior Clinical Fellowship Scheme.
North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust is a medium sized District General Hospital based in Edmonton in Enfield, North London. We serve a diverse multicultural population largely from the London boroughs of Enfield and Haringey but also draw patients from Waltham Forest and Barnet. Many of our patients live in wards that are within the 5% most deprived in the UK and a large proportion of our patients were born abroad. This makes it both a fascinating and a challenging hospital to work in.
Main duties of the job
Over the last decade we have rebuilt almost all of the hospital and now have facilities that we are proud to work in. We employ just over 3,000 staff, more than half of whom live locally. We encourage apprenticeships from the local community and work closely with our local Health Watch.
The hospital provides a full range of elective and non-elective secondary care services, though it is highly emergency driven with a very busy A&E department. The Trust also has specialist haematological, HIV, sickle cell, chemotherapy and radiotherapy services. All are supported by a full range of investigative services including an imaging department that boasts 3-Tesla MRI and 64-slice CT scanners.
Applications are welcomed for a Senior Colorectal Fellow ST7+ (peri or post CCT). This is a fixed term post to start in October 2024.

North Mid is part of North Central London integrated care system – consisting of the NHS and Local authority organisations in Camden, Islington, Barnet, Enfield and Haringey. As with other ICS’s, we are working increasingly closely with partners and indeed many of our financial and performance objectives are measured at this system level. Whilst all organisations remain as standalone, statutory bodies we have an ICS infrastructure for making shared decisions and agreeing shared approaches.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This 12-month fellowship would be suitable for trainees who have completed, or who are near to completing, their higher surgical training and would like specialised clinical experience in all aspects of colorectal surgery before attaining a Consultant position. Opportunities to gain experience in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery, proctology, pelvic floor surgery and tibial nerve stimulation.

KNOWLEDGE AND CLINICAL EXPERTISE IN SPECIALITY AND RELATED AREAS
Essential criteria
- Ability to manage acute surgical patients and the colorectal inpatient workload
- Trauma experience with current ATLS certificate
- Competency in the general aspects of colorectal surgery
- Colonoscopy
Desirable criteria
- Extensive experience at Registrar level
- JAG accreditation in Colonoscopy
MANAGEMENT / AUDIT
Essential criteria
- Experience of clinical risk management
- Evidence of participation in audit
- Ability to teach, supervise and feedback on the progress of registrars, FY1’s and Core trainees
- Working knowledge of NHS issues, including the range of performance targets
- Commitment to support the organisation achieve the range of specified performance targets
