This is a full time (10 programmed activities) consultant post based at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust Breast Surgery Department. The Breast Surgery Directorate consists of three very busy and dynamic subunits that provide care for the local population in North and North Central London. Based across three hospital sites, Barnet, Chase Farm and Royal Free Hospital, the unit has specialist interest in benign and malignant breast disease, breast reconstruction and oncoplastic surgery as well as specialist services such as Electro-Chemotherapy and Intra-operative Radiotherapy. The unit has very close links to the large Plastic Surgery Service based within the Royal Free Hospital site which attracts reconstructive cases from across the region.

More than 600 primary cancers are seen per annum by the Royal Free London combined Breast Unit and our strong Medical and Clinical Oncology Departments manage patients in house making this one of the largest breast departments in the UK. The further development of our breast and reconstructive surgery service is a key part of the Trusts future strategy for clinical services. The department has a strong academic background and participates regularly in clinical trials. The department has had a number of doctoral research fellows and has a track record in innovation.

There is a dedicated breast clinic on each site with co-located imaging at both the Chase Farm Hospital and Royal Free Hospital sites. The breast unit at the Royal Free Hospital site has recently undergone a significant upgrade and expansion, doubling the overall footprint and providing additional imaging facilities, an enlarged waiting room and patient facilities.

The successful applicant will join a team of six breast surgery consultants, two associate specialists, four speciality doctors, and one specialist registrar. The department is also supported by two lead breast nurses and ten clinical nurse specialists along with nine breast radiology consultants. The plastic surgery service has a close working relationship with the breast team and six of our plastic surgeons have a particular interest in breast reconstruction. The full gamut of reconstructive options is offered by our breast and plastic surgery teams.

The department currently has a National Oncoplastic Breast Fellow and the regular multidisciplinary oncoplastic MDT is a key part of the planning process for suitable or complex patients

This post will focus on academic leadership for the department whilst delivering patient centred care across the Barnet and Royal Free Hospital sites. The workload includes general and cancer breast surgery, reconstructive procedures and incorporate joint breast reconstructive surgery cases with the Plastic Surgery team. Elective operating activities will be delivered at Royal Free Hospital. The postholder would bring experience in laboratory and clinical research. Ideal for a strong clinical academic, the post incorporates 2 full PAs for academic work which would be reviewed in due course with further opportunities with the University Department possible depending on academic progress and delivery.

The post includes 7 programmed activities devoted to direct clinical care and associated administration and 1 programme activities for supporting activities (CPD). There is currently no on-call commitment. The post includes the use of a shared office and secretarial team.

The successful candidate will be a dynamic addition to an already enlarging and highly skilled team in the context of a very large and rewarding breast service with considerable opportunities for ongoing development.
