Job overview
The post (that is a replacement post) will be in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the North Middlesex Hospital and the appointee will join the other 17 Consultants.
The new appointees will join a busy and supportive department with a strong commitment to high standards of patient care.
Main duties of the job
The North Middlesex Hospital is in a state of rapid change with a brand new “purpose-built” Accident and Emergency Department which houses a Gynaecology Emergency Room. We have an active Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit/ Emergency Gynaecology Unit, with two trained nurse ultrasonographers plus 3 Consultant sessions, two ultrasound machines with pulsed colour Doppler facilities, and daily beta-hCG assays.
The hospital has been designated as a Cancer Unit within the “North Central” London Oncology network. There are modern, up-to-date facilities for minimal access gynaecological surgery including video cameras, laparoscopes, hystero-resectoscopes, Novasure endometrial ablation. The success of the service has led to increased demand for minimal access surgery from GPs and patients. There is two weekly out-patient hysteroscopy clinic.
here is at present one weekly gynaecological urodynamic session. Enfield and Haringey Health Authority employ a senior nurse incontinence advisor and there is an active incontinence support group with a senior physiotherapist.
Obstetrics
General description
Currently the department caters for around 5000 deliveries per year. Large proportion of our women are from ethnic minorities with associated problems such as pre-eclampsia, sickle cell disease, thalassaemia, HIV and substance abuse, although the perinatal mortality rate is currently around 6 per 1000.

Our services at NMUH include pre-menstrual problems, Fertility, bladder dysfunction, UroGynae, specialist clinics for FGM women, Colposcopy, Menopause, Endometriosis, Recurrent Miscarriage, Fibroids and collaborative working with UCLH – Gynae-oncology This post would suit consultant who are looking for the satisfaction of making a real difference in a busy inner-city London University Hospital.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This is a substantive consultant post with special interest in Gynaecological Oncology and Colposcopy.The appointee will lead the colposcopy service and work as Deputy Gynaecology Oncology lead.
The Consultant will be covering Labour ward and caesarean section on a 1:17 rota basis. The Labour ward has protected cover with consultant present every day (including weekends) from 08:00 till 22:00. The Consultant will cover from home (22:00- 08:00).
There will be a 1:17 on call commitment at North Middlesex Hospital only.
There is a 1:17 hot week for gynaecology on call (this will come up to 3-4 sessions).
The other fixed clinical sessions will include Target clinic, Colposcopy clinics,0.5 General theatre, GOPD,1 clinical administration session & MDT.
One of the SPA sessions will be for special interest (deputy gynaecology oncology lead and colposcopy and educational supervision) and the other for mandatory training, appraisal, audit and CPD.
The gynaecology on call consultant (hot week) will be doing all gynaecology and obstetrics ward rounds.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration
- Medical Degree – MBBS or equivalent
- MRCOG or appropriate specialist qualification
- CCT or eligibility for entry within 6months of the date of AAC
- ATSM in advanced labour ward
- ATSM in benign abdominal surgery ;open & laparoscopic
- Colposcopy Accreditation
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree MD, PhD
- Experience in target gynaecology clinic and MDT
- Experience in Managing cervical screening programme
- Experience in leading gynaecology oncology services
Professional Experience
Essential criteria
- Broad General Obstetrics & Gynaecology experience
- Excellent Clinical skills
- Experience/Interest in two week wait pathway
Desirable criteria
- Experience in running 2 weeks wait gynaecology clinics
- Evidence of training in risk management systems
- Experience of work in a hospital with a diverse ethnic population
- Previous experience in complex obstetrics and gynaecology with a diverse ethnic population
- Formal training in communication in difficult situations
Education
Essential criteria
- Evidence of taking part in postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
- Experience of appraisal and assessment

- Completion of teaching/training course

- Experience in MDT teaching and simulations
