Job overview

These exciting senior posts in Emergency Medicine are aimed at doctors (ST3+ equivalent) who have at least 12 months experience working in Emergency Medicine.

The post holder will work on the Middle Grade rota and if on the senior tier will be responsible for running the Department in the late evenings and nights. This will include leading Trauma calls and Cardiac arrests. There is consultant presence on-site from 0800 – Midnight each day, and a consultant on-call from midnight to 0800.

Whilst in ED you will work as part of the Middle Grade rota. This is split into a senior and junior tier. The post-holder will move between these 2 tiers as experience allows. The Middle Grade rota is self- rostered giving great flexibility to the doctors to choose their shifts and opportunity to improve work-life balance to the applicant.

The posts are designed to allow the post holder to develop essential competences and to progress towards Article 14. We are committed to provide secondment/s in specialist area/s in the hospital according to a personal development plan. These may include 3 months in the following areas (ITU/Anaesthetics/Acute Medicine/Paediatrics).

There is also an excellent opportunity to develop emergency ultrasound skills. We have two in-house Level 2 trainers and have good links with the ultrasound department to facilitate this learning objective.

All post-holders encouraged to participate in departmental audit and Quality Improvement Projects.

Main duties of the job

The Emergency Department has an annual attendance of
~ 190,000 new patients. 27% of attendances are under the age of 16.

The department moved into a brand new, state of the art, purpose-built air-conditioned unit in May 2010.

The department comprises of 4 streaming rooms, a dedicated initial assessment and treatment area for ambulance arrivals, a 6-bay resuscitation unit, a 18-bay majors area, a separate treatment area for sitting patients, an urgent care centre and a paediatric emergency department with a separate waiting area. The department had been redesigned and restructured recently to further optimise patient care.

Acute Medical and Assessment Units are located in close proximity to the department.
There is an emergency Radiography Department adjacent to the ED which is staffed 24 hours a day. There is a CT scanner available at all times with excellent consultant based radiology support.

Full emergency laboratory facilities including a well-resourced point of care testing room are available.

There is a significant trauma workload; the department is part of the London trauma network.

The department receives nearly 20% of its workload as ambulance borne. The department has a philosophy of comprehensive patient care where the initial management of the patient is undertaken in the ED and the patient then handed over to in-patient teams. The case mix has the highest acuity in the North East Thames region with preponderance towards medically unwell patients.
