Job overview

The post is based at Magnolia unit, St Michael’s site with potential to support other P2 bedded services within the trust .  Magnolia unit provides  short stay Inpatient rehabilitation for adults  admitted post Stroke & neurological diagnoses as well as multipathology admissions, having have complex needs that require comprehensive assessment, rehabilitation and effective discharge planning by the multi-disciplinary team which you will be an integral part of.

 

Main duties of the job

 

To provide an expert SALT (Speech and Language Therapy) service to adults with a range of conditions including Stroke, neurological & multipathology (non – neurological) presentations based within the Inpatient bedded rehabilitation wards ( Magnolia unit, Capetown & Canterbury wards).

To assess and treat a caseload of patients with a range of Speech, language, communication, and swallowing needs, as an autonomous and independent practitioner for patients who may have acute, chronic and/or complex neurological and / or multipathology (non – neurological) dysfunction and maintain appropriate patient records and statistics.

To have an overview of the inpatient SALT caseload

To provide regular support and supervision, i.e. 1:1 supervision and joint sessions for Band 6 inpatient SALT  & Support them & other junior, assistant, MDT staff  band 6 SLT offering training and education as required.

Lead on and comply with professional and departmental standards of practice within own clinical area.

Jointly alongside band 7 Team leads, lead the neurotherapy team and present evidence-based projects and  research/ departmental audit and service developments with support from the Integrated therapies Lead.

Alongside the Integrated therapies lead, ensure team compliance with documentation, processes, and data collections standards, i.e.  SSNAP, TOMS, other required data.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To carry out assessment of patients as an autonomous practitioner including complex or chronic presentations, using a high level of clinical reasoning skills and integrating knowledge of evidence-based practice.

To provide highly specialist SALT assessment and intervention to individual patients with neurological and non-neurological conditions presenting with complex needs within own caseload in the inpatient unit.

  Ensures adherence to national standards of evidence based clinical practice and develops guidelines when appropriate in collaboration with Integrated Therapies Lead.

To have overall accountability for the planning and management of a highly complex and specialist clinical caseload

To facilitate patient involvement in decision making at all stages of their clinical management, ensuring that they have consented to therapy intervention in line with Trust ethical-legal policies and the relevant Code of Professional Conduct

Using expert specialist knowledge of communication and swallowing impairments, to undertake complex therapy assessments which include an evaluation of the impact of patients' diagnoses, stage of disease and agreed treatment plans on their ability to function and overall quality of life and to make clinical decisions on the most appropriate form of therapy intervention, both short and long term

Education & professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree/graduate diploma in Speech and Language therapy
  • Health Professions Council (HCPC) registration
  • Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
Desirable criteria
  • Member of a professional specialist interest group in neurological practice (CEN Clinical Excellence Network)
  • Additional qualification or Certificated post graduate courses or equivalent in-house training in clinical specialty e.g. MSc or accredited courses at postgraduate level in specialist clinical area

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial under & general post-graduate clinical experience
  • Experience working within the specialist area of neurological rehabilitation
  • Experience of supervising or line managing Speech & language therapists and assistants al background (e.g. physiotherapist) Experience of carrying out appraisal
  • Experience of carrying out Appraisals
  • Experience of working alone, demonstrating ability to organise work and manage time independently.
  • Experience of teaching/education of colleagues, multidisciplinary team and/or public/carers
  • Thorough understanding of setting & maintaining clinical standards
  • Experience in team building and team working skills
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within the inpatient setting in the NHS
  • Experience of supervising or line managing staff from other professional background (e.g. physiotherapist)
  • Evidence of CPD
