Job overview

We are seeking a Locum Consultant in Clinical Oncology with a specialist interest in breast malignancy to join our dynamic and supportive Breast Oncology team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a well-established oncology service, with opportunities for professional development, quality improvement initiatives, and research involvement. The post-holder will join the breast oncology team at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (RFL) on the North Middlesex Hospital Health Unit site as a 6 PAs (less than full time) as a locum consultant on a fixed term contract for 4 1/2 months to cover a period of sabbatical (May to September 2026).

The North Middlesex hospital oncology team consists of 12 substantive oncology consultants. The breast oncology team has 2 Medical Oncology Consultants and 1 Clinical Oncologist (this post) along with 3 Breast Clinical Nurse Specialists. There is an active local research department that is managed by the wider trust Research Governance team, based at Royal Free Health Unit in Hampstead.

Consultants have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and for the proper functioning of their department. They are expected to undertake administrative duties associated with the care of their patients and the running of their clinical departments.
The appointee will be expected to take responsibility for maintaining their CPD.

Formal teaching sessions are organised differently in various departments and there will be opportunity to be involved in training and teaching sessions.

Clinical responsibilities

The following is not an exhaustive or exclusive list of the duties of a consultant. The appointee is expected to:

The core responsibilities of the post holder will be as follows:

1.    To support the Breast oncology (systemic and radiotherapy treatment) service at the North Middlesex Hospital

2.    To attend the weekly tumour specific Breast MDTs

3.    To take responsibility for the designated clinical workload including all relevant MDMs, out-patient clinics, and review and responsibility for in-patients.

4.    To take part in clinical trials in breast cancer

5.    To participate in the consultant on-call rota for oncology at North Middlesex Hospital (1 in 16)

6.    To participate in the consultant led review of breast oncology inpatients on the North Middlesex Hospital.

7.    Work with consultant colleagues and nursing staff to ensure efficient use of Trust’s resources and contribute actively to clinical governance in the department and to development of quality enhancement projects in the unit.

8.    To provide postgraduate teaching for junior staff

9.    To provide clinical supervision for specialist registrars

10.  To participate in undergraduate medical student teaching

11.  To comply with all the clinical governance processes and procedures of the Trust

12.  Compliance with Patients’ Charter and Purchasers’ requirements

13.  To lead and participate in medical audit as per Royal College of Physicians guidelines

14.  To maintain Continuing Professional Development accreditation as per Royal College of Physicians guidelines

15.  To participate in the Trust appraisal programme and GMC revalidation processes.

16.  The Trust supports the requirements for Continuing Medical Education as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • MRCP or equivalent medical degree
  • Full GMC Registration
  • CCST or CCT in Clinical or Medical Oncology and on the specialist register or within 6 months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview
Desirable criteria
  • Post Graduate degree
