Job overview
We are seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic candidate to join our Paediatric Emergency Department and a Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.
This role is offered at full time in the first instance, but we welcome applications for part time and job sharing options.
Main duties of the job
General Responsibilities as Consultant Paediatrician
The following is not an exhaustive or exclusive list of the duties of a consultant. The appointee is expected to:
- Provide senior clinician services to paediatrics and ED as per job plan or as agreed within the Trust, and as required when on call.
- Work with consultant colleagues and nursing staff to ensure efficient use of Trust’s resources and contribute actively to clinical governance in the department and to development of quality enhancement projects in the unit.
- Provide senior clinician services to area of special interest as per the job plan or as agreed within the Trust.
- Show flexibility and undertake different appropriate clinical tasks within allocated DCC sessions at the request of the clinical manager, as the need arises.
- Actively participate in the Unit’s Teaching Programme and undertake supervision, teaching and training of medical trainees and other multi-professional staff, in line with guidance from the relevant Royal Colleges or specialty bodies.
- Actively participate in clinical guidelines development, audit and CPD.

Essential criteria
- Leadership skills

Education & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- CCT paediatrics (paediatric emergency medicine) – or demonstrable equivalent training (or within 6 months of obtaining) Full GMC registration
- MBBS or equivalent, MRCPCH or equivalent
- Grid paediatric emergency medicine training or equivalent experience in paediatric emergency medicine
- Confidence with child protection – up to date Safeguarding Level 3 training is essential
- APLS/PALS provider
- ATLS/ETC or paediatric trauma course
Desirable criteria
- Relevant higher degree
- Research / publications relevant to subspecialty
- APLS instructor
- NLS provider
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Understanding of clinical governance
- Experience on providing high quality training and education to undergraduates and postgraduates
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and an ability to relate to staff and patients.
- Understanding and proven ability to apply research findings in a clinical/organisational context
Desirable criteria
- Further qualification in medical education
- Ability to support and motivate staff during periods of pressure
