Job overview
The Royal Free Hospital (RFH) pharmacy department works under a ‘specials’ manufacturers licence. The RFH pharmacy department also holds a Manufacturing Authorisation for Investigational Medicinal Products MIA (IMP), which allows the unit to manufacture products for Clinical Trials. The Pharmacy Manufacturing department is primarily concerned with the preparation and supply of medicines to internal and external customers including homecare services. The two key areas within the department that the post holder will be responsible for on rotation are Aseptic services (Cytotoxic unit, CIVAS) and Sterile /Non Sterile manufacture.
The post holder will ensure that production services are delivered in a safe, effective, economic and timely manner. The post holder will be responsible for the training and supervision of all technical staff within the designated areas and ensuring that all documentation/procedures comply with current legislation. The post holder will collaborate with the Operational Lead Pharmacist and Operations Chief Technician to maximise pharmacy departmental resources. Overall the post holder will be responsible for the training, accreditation, management and safety of staff working in the unit, whether on a short term, or long term basis.
Main duties of the job
This role involves operational management of the Chemotherapy Unit, Central Intravenous Additive Services (CIVAS), Laminar Air Flow Cabinet unit (LAFC Unit), Sterile Batches unit and Non-Sterile unit on a rotational basis.
Aseptic Services:
The Chemotherapy service primarily provides internal supply of parenteral systemic anticancer treatment and clinical trials to the day case outpatient clinics. The team currently consists of approximately 10 members of staff with negative pressure isolators. The CIVA service consists of approximately 20 members of staff and focuses on the supply of medicines to external customers including homecare. The CIVA service has positive pressure isolators, automated technologies and the LAFC unit has a multi room grade B unit housing laminar air flow cabinets.
Sterile and Non Sterile Services:
This rotation focuses on managing sterile services and non-sterile services. Sterile services encompass the manufacture of terminally sterilised batch products for internal use and supply to external customers. The Non-Sterile service comprises of compounding of the semisolids, oral liquids, powders, capsules, over labelling and prepacking of medicines.

Essential criteria
- 3 years post qualification experience in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
- Evidence of ongoing CPD.
- Relevant and proven pharmaceutical manufacturing experience or relevant experience in a production unit.
Desirable criteria
- Current registered pharmacy technician with GPhC or registered with relevant professional body.
- NVQ Pharmacy Services Level 3, BTEC or relevant Pharmaceutical Science Degree (BSc, MSc) or equivalent.
- Post graduate Diploma level qualification in Management studies or equivalent
- Willingness to undertake further training to advance skills and knowledge in preparation for development

- Relevant and proven pharmaceutical manufacturing experience or relevant experience in a production unit.

- Attending service group meetings.
