Job overview

There is an exciting opportunity for a senior band 7 pharmacy technician to lead and manage the provision of a pharmacy technical service to the intensive care units and theatres at the Royal Free Hospital. The successful candidate will be responsible for all technical aspects of medicines management in these areas and for development and delivery of the pharmacy technical service to these areas. 

The Intensive care unit at the Royal Free Hospital comprises of 50 intensive care beds with over 1500 patients admitted to ICU each year. The Royal Free hospital is a major tertiary referral centre for medical and surgical specialities with the critical care directorate providing services to support all our inpatient specialities including hepatobiliary, surgery, hepatology, complex vascular surgery, infectious diseases and haematology. Royal Free has an active organ transplant programme and the department of intensive care medicine cares for more than 100 liver transplant recipients each year.

The Trust takes pride as one of the major specialist centres for infectious diseases, liver and renal transplants, breast and plastic surgery, myeloma, and neuroendocrine tumours. Working in one of the main speciality centres brings exciting opportunities to see a range of patients at different levels of complexities. 

 

Main duties of the job

The main role of this post holder will be to establish and manage the provision of a pharmacy technical service to the intensive care units, theatres (including day surgery) and resuscitation team at the Royal Free Hospital. 

In addition, they will also establish and manage the provision of a clinical technical service to the intensive care units at the Royal Free Hospital and be responsible for all technical aspects of medicines management. This will include helping to complete the medicines reconciliation process for all patients and ensuring safe, appropriate and timely supply of medicines. They will also take responsibility for appropriate supply of stock items to the wards and introduce stock lists for controlled drugs along with a robust and secure method for ordering and supplying them. Regular review of all stock lists to improve stock holding efficiency will also be a key role for this post.

The post holder will consistently work in an accurate, effective, and efficient manner to support the provision of a high-quality service to patients, Trust staff and departments.   • Accreditation in Medicines management (AIMM), Medicines Optimisation Programme (MOP) or equivalent relevant experience in the medicines management role
  • Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician
  • Educational Supervisor Training course or Assessor A1 qualification or equivalent
  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
Desirable criteria
  • Foundation degree and/or Management qualification and/or clinical diploma or working towards

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Considerable post qualification experience in medicines management at ward level in ITU and theatres
  • Previous assessable supervisory experience and experience in training
  • Experience of working closely with other healthcare professionals (HCP’s) such as nursing staff, operational managers
  • Computer literate including Microsoft software products including pharmacy systems.
  • Experience of conducting appraisals with feedback
  • Experience of recruitment and selection of other technical staff
  • Experience of working closely with other healthcare professionals (HCP’s) such as nursing staff, operational managers
Desirable criteria
  • Considerable post qualification work in an operational management capacity
