Job overview
The role is for a motivated, flexible individual working in a busy theatre/day surgery department supporting both the emergency and elective surgical pathway. The post holder will be required to undertake any portering roles required to ensure the smooth, efficient running of the department. Including transferring patients, specimens, medical records, mail, meals, linen and collect blood products.
The post holder will be expected to help within the theatre cleaning, positioning patients and assisting the scrub and operating department staff.
Working with the multidisciplinary team to ensure safety of patients and staff.
Cleaning and maintaining of theatres and equipment. Restocking areas as required
The post holder may be required to support in other areas or departments as required.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for a flexible hardworking orderly to join our busy theatre/day surgery department. The post involves night and weekend work and requires transporting patients and equipment between all wards and departments and theatres, together with many other tasks which are required to ensure safety for patients and staff, and efficient use of resources.
Previous theatre or theatre portering experience required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To help transport patients to and from the department, assist with manual handling and transferring of patients compiling with Trust policy.
- To help move and position patients as required within the department using the correct aids and procedures.
- To maintain patients’ trolleys ensuring they are clean and functioning, report any defects to the team leader.
- To maintain and change the oxygen cylinders on the patient trolleys ensuring they are functional.
- Communicate with patients in order to promote their comfort and well-being while transferring patients.
- Maintain patient’s dignity, comfort and confidentiality at all times.
- Communicate with other members of the organization and respond appropriately.
- All of the above should be performed with due consideration of patients privacy and dignity and complying with the Trust’s Infection Control Policy. This includes adherence to the hand washing policy and disposal of clinical waste.
- to complete any roles as directed by the senior staff within competencies both in and outside of theatre.
