Job overview
We are looking to recruit an experienced or newly qualified Psychotherapist/Clinical/Counselling Psychologist to work therapeutically in our psychodynamic pathway. This post plays a pivotal role in delivering specialist psychological care to adults with complex mental health needs. The post is located in Lewisham Integrated Therapies team, Lewisham and works closely with community mental health teams.
Main duties of the job
To work under the supervision of a Senior Psychotherapist in the team, to deliver psychodynamic therapies to those presenting with complex emotional needs. To supervise trainees, honorary and other junior staff. To offer consultations and other input to community mental health teams.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- • To have undertaken a recognised qualification in one of the core mental health professions, e.g. psychiatric nursing, clinical/counselling psychology, medicine, social work and occupational therapy OR to have equivalent relevant experience and demonstrable competence to work in the mental health field in the NHS.
Desirable criteria
- Further training in Psychodynamic models of therapy.
Experience
Essential criteria
- • Experience of assessment and treatment of clients with a range of a complex emotional needs using psychodynamic models of therapy
- • Experience that supports working with, and addressing issues of, diversity within local communities. This may have been gained through work, research, volunteering and / or lived experience
- • Significant post-qualification/graduation experience including experience of individual and group therapy with people with complex mental health needs
- • Experience of working with issues of risk and safety both physical and relational
- • Experience of multi-disciplinary working and working with community mental health teams
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- • Knowledge of the theory of psychological therapy and it’s therapeutic application for those presenting with complex emotional needs. Associated awareness of assessments
- • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health issues, child and adult protection, and equalities
- • Knowledge of factors affecting acceptability and accessibility of mental health care.
- • To deliver psychological/psychotherapeutic therapy across cultural and other differences
- • To select and administer specialist psychological assessments, interpreting and integrating complex data that require analysis, interpretation and comparison, drawn from several sources.
Skills
Essential criteria
- • To communicate skilfully and sensitively complex and sensitive information with clients, carers and colleagues overcoming barriers to communication including sensory, and emotional difficulties, cultural differences and hostility to or rejection of information
- • Consultation skills to work with the multi-professional team or other professional groups and sensitively managing, a number of people’s needs simultaneously within the context of therapeutic work/consultation
- • To plan allocation of tasks to assistants/trainees as appropriates. Skills in providing teaching and training to other professional groups
- • To select and administer specialist assessments, interpreting and integrating complex data that require analysis, interpretation and comparison, drawn from several sources
Abilities
Essential criteria
- • Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team, contributing to effective team functioning and holding team roles.
- • Ability to manage emotionally stressful situations such as working with victims of abuse or trauma, or with people who engage in severe self-harming or aggressive behaviour
