Job overview

We are looking to recruit a Band 4  Dual Diagnosis Practitioner  to be a member of the Cannabis Clinic for Patients with Psychosis (CCP) multi-disciplinary team, taking a leading role in the provision of on-going assessments, groups running , care planning, treatment delivery of the young adults with psychotic disorders and cannabis used referred to the service. Young adults with psychotic disorders often struggle to engage with the existing addiction services and therefore someone with experience in working with this clinical population would be preferred.

The Maudsley Charity recently awarded to the lead Consultant of this service and her team funding to carry out a Randomised Control Trial (RCT) of the service intervention. 

This is a fixed term post is funded as part of this award   to support  the delivery of the Cannabis Clinic for Psychosis intervention to those referred to the service who have been enrolled in the RCT. 

The post holder will join the Cannabis Clinic for Psychosis team as well as be part of the RCT, having the opportunity to learn about this new service as well as gaining experience in translational research.

 

Main duties of the job

  1. Work closely with the Trust dual diagnosis pathway practitioners and the Early Intervention Community Mental Health teams to promote awareness of the service and of the RCT and coordinate new referrals to the Cannabis Clinic for Psychosis

  2.  Deliver the one to one intervention to those under the care of the service and participate in the weekly clinical group supervision where all the cases under the care of the service are presented

  3. Take part in the organization and expansion of the weekly PEER group open to the clinical population served by the CCP. The PEER group runs on ZOOM every Tuesday pm.

The post holder will be working with the Cannabis Clinic for Psychosis, highly skilled and knowledgeable multi-disciplinary team who will support them in their development and  ability to deliver the best care  to our service users while offering the post holder the opportunity to take part in research activities.

The Cannabis Clinic for Psychosis is part of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM).

SLaM  provides the widest range of NHS mental health services in the UK as well as substance misuse services for people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol. We work closely with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), King's College London and are part of King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre. There are very few organisations in the world that have such wide-ranging capabilities working with mental illness. Our scope is unique because it is built on three major foundations: care and treatment, science and research, and training.

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

In conjunction with senior staff, the post holder will co-ordinate new referral and join the delivery of care with a person centred healthcare model, learning to use complex clinical decision making where appropriate and responding to changes in presentation/ situation appropriately. To promote shared decision making with patients/relatives/carers, as appropriate, in terms of involvement in all aspects of their care.

In particular, the post holder will be involved under senior colleagues supervision in the clinical management of those suffering from their first episode of psychosis  with cannabis use  who have been referred to the Cannabis Clinic for Psychosis, because they wish to stop/reduce their use.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a NHS mental health setting with Dual Diagnosis Services
  • Experience of using word processing and database use as well as a willingness to improve existing skill base A/I
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in an addictions community setting
  • Experience of working in a team
  • Experience in collecting research data for clinical settings

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GSCE English and Math or equivalent Grade C or above
  • BsC in Psychology
  • Dual Diagnosis Training
Desirable criteria
  • MsC in Early Intervention or Mental health studies

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of clinical intervention appropriate to the care of Dual Diagnosis patients
  • Understanding of harm reduction, and relapse prevention in relation to cannabis dependence
  • Effective assessment and engagement skills A/I
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Ability to organise and manage time effectively and work autonomously A/I
  • IT skills in relation to clinical notes and report writing A/I
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in running groups with Dual Diagnosis patients
  • Up to date knowledge of the impact of cannabis use on psychosis outcome
  • Use of power point and SPSS or other statistical
  • Advanced clinical decision-making, leadership, training delivery
