An exciting opportunity has arisen within SLAM  for a Mechanical Technician to join the  Estates team. The Trust has four main sites and community properties, therefore applicants should be able to arrange their work, parts and materials and carry out tasks in a safe and tidy manner.

To maintain continuity of service there will be times when extra hours, altered work patterns/duties is required.  The post-holder must have a good general knowledge of domestic and commercial buildings.

Main duties of the job

Install, maintain, service, and repair a wide range of plant and equipment
Diagnose and repair mechanical faults, give technical advice to ensure safety and compliance with HTMs and regulatory standards. 
tilise Building Management System (BMS) to monitor, 
and adhere to required standards.
3. Modify and document mechanical systems, install temporary setups, and manufacture or modify equipment.
4. Conduct condition surveys, prepare systems for inspection
5. Ensure all work meets statutory and mandatory safety requirements.
6. Supervise installations and maintenance by staff and contractors,.
7. Liaise with compliance teams, contractors, ward staff, and other disciplines.
8. Attend meetings, provide specialist advice, and manage minor projects with contractors.
9. Supervise and motivate staff, manage daily work allocation, plan and organize tasks to ensure efficient workflow, provide training, and cover for the supervisor during sickness and 
leave.
10. Oversee risk assessments, handle maintenance requests, raise purchase orders, and maintain tools and equipment.
11. Manage and perform heavy repairs and equipment moves, 
12. Implement and contribute to policy and service development, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations and other standards, participating in emergency on-call 
duties, and driving between trust sites in a safe and timely manner adhering to trust policies.

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) provide the widest range of NHS mental health services in the UK as well as substance misuse services for people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol. We work closely with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), King's College London and are part of King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre. SLaM employ around 5000 staff and serve a local population of 1.1 million people. We have more than 230 services including inpatient wards, outpatient and community services. Currently, provide inpatient care for approximately 5,300 people each year and treat more than 45,000 patients in the community in Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark; as well as substance misuse services for residents of Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The primary goal of this role is to ensure the highest standards of maintenance and repair 
across all Trust properties and facilities. This includes installing, maintaining, servicing, and 
repairing a wide range of estate equipment, such as HVAC, heating systems, plumbing, 
drainage, and roofing. The role involves diagnosing and repairing mechanical faults, ensuring 
compliance with safety standards, and modifying and documenting mechanical systems. 
Additional responsibilities include conducting condition surveys, supervising apprentices, 
liaising with various teams and contractors, managing minor projects, overseeing risk 
assessments, and contributing to policy and service development. Effective communication, 
supervision, and adherence to statutory safety requirements are essential.
The successful candidate will drive the efficiency and effectiveness of our maintenance team 
through exceptional planning, organisation, and communication. They will play a crucial role in 
ensuring that all maintenance activities are carried out safely, timely, and to the highest 
standards.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ-3 or equivalent relevant qualification
  • Health and Safety qualification in one of the following: • Safe use of ladders, • Mobile Elevated Working Platform trained (MEWP) • Safe use and assembly of mobile scaffold towers (PASMA) • COSHH • Manual Handling
  • Current clean driving licence or training towards obtaining a driving licence
Desirable criteria
  • Legionella awareness -Legionella training. -Water Regulations -Asbestos Awareness -Fire Safety Awareness

Experience

Essential criteria
  • To have experience in plumbing, heating and ventilation within a hospital or similar environment
  • Experience of working within a commercial or Estates maintenance environment
  • Competent in the installation of pump valves and associated pipework
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a mental healthcare environment.
  • NHS (healthcare) experience in a similar role

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of domestic and commercial heating, boilers and associated components
  • Competent in the installation of copper, plastic and iron pipework, Pipe fabrication, welding / soldering and other pipe works
  • Knowledge of associated trades
  • Good communication skills
  • To have basic computer skills
Desirable criteria
  • • Knowledge of compliance demands in healthcare
